Why can't I get my E6600 over 2.7GHz?

I have the following set up:

E6600 with stock cooler
4GB Geil RAM
Asus P5B PRemium Vista Edition

Following Clunk's guide, I can get the CPU up to 2.7GHz by raising the CPU Frequency to 300 (x9). However, if I attempt to go any higher than this, my PC won't boot, and I have to unplug it. When it loads back up, it states that it was a 'Bad Overclock'

My memory voltage is currently at 2.00V, with RAM timings of 5-5-5-15

The CPU VCore voltage is at 1.3875.

Any ideas please?

Have you considered that what you need may be a better cooler after all with extra voltage and a higher FSB your CPU is going to get hot. It may also be that your MB, CPU or both just don't like overclocking, as all guides say "Your mileage may vary".

Indeed, but I only want to get to 3GHz, which I understand should be easily achieveable and fine with the stock cooler.

I am getting a new cooler, to push to 3.6 (if I can...), but I am just having a play with standard cooler at the moment.

The memory is running at 1:1 at the moment, yes.

I haven't touched the vMCH.

What sort of temps do you get at 2.7GHz? My E6600 hits 3.4GHz easily with 1.375v, and I don't think its a particularly good one, so I wouldn't give it any more voltage really..... maybe that's the issue, giving you too high temps.

Have you disabled c1e, Vanderpool, etc?

You could try upping the vMCH a few notches, what options does it give you, is it 1.25, 1.45, 1.55, 1.65v like the P5B deluxe? If so go for 1.55 and see if that improves things.

Yeah, U might need a cooler, ur mobo or CPU might be getting too hot....secondly, GSte...does turning off c1e and vanderpool help? Ive left them on will it lower temp or what?

It won't lower the temps but it will reduce the load on the chipset which will aid stability.

Vanderpool is a feature that has something to do with increasing performance when running virtual machines I think.

Yeah it ran Orthos for like 5 Hours last night till I woke up n switched it off and OCCT goes well too (tested for 2 hours)...anyways, do you think i can push my value ram further? its 667 Stock, rite now on 800Mhz with 1.9v...relaxed timings to 6-6-6-15

yeah....rite now Corsair 1Gb is available for 44 pounds here...but I really dont know if its going to be worth it....I think my value rams are doing fine, just dont know their limit yet...and dont want to know the hard way ....theyr okay for now, considering I picked them up for around 55 pounds, both , 2GB, new...

Just run your ram on a divider. When overclocking the cpu you really should run the ram at the slackest timing/divider so it does not interfere with stability as you up the FSB. Once you find the maximum stable cpu overclock then it's time to up the ram timings and use a higher divider (higher meaning 1:1 > 2:3 > 1:2 >1:3 etc).
