    New pc... Decisions decisions...

    Hi all,
i am currently looking into buying a new pc for gaming on...
my budget at the moment is £575 including vat. (may be able to go £600)
at the moment i have a rough idea of what i would like as the spec.
the graphics card i definately want a 512mb geforce 8800gt... but if it push coems to shove maybe something cheaper.
    processor an core2 duo e6750
    arctic cooling freezer 7 pro
i am basically unsure about the rest of the kit...
would be very greatfull if someone could post up prices and items along with details about it as i am very eager to play games.
Also, if the shop the items will be from can build the pc for me as i have never built one befor eand dont want to attempt at it please let me know.
Thanks and look forward to reading your replys

I assume you do not want to overclock and do not have a copy of XP to hand?? If you wish to play in DX10 you can substitute the XP copy for a Vista Home Basic copy for around the same price.

BTW if you do not want to overclock the supplied cooler with cpu will be fine.

    Re: New pc... Decisions decisions...

If you replace the 8800GT with the following:

Gecube HD 3850 Pro 512MB GDDR3 Overclocked Edition Dual DVI PCI-E Graphics Card - Ebuyer

you will drop the price down to £548.06.

This cards has got a good review:

GeCube Radeon HD 3850 X-Turbo III 512 MB - techPowerUp! Forums

However it is 5% to 25% slower than the 8800GT 512mb but is nearly 50 quid cheaper. This makes it around a third less in cost.

    A review on the 256mb 8800GT

    Expreview.com - Extra Hardware News Report! » Blog Archive » [First review]Galaxy GeForce 8800GT 256MB

    What resolution is your monitor?
Does he have a copy of an OS to hand?? You have to assume this in the build.

Another review from Anandtech of the 256MB 8800GT is not so favourable:

AnandTech: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512 & GeForce 8800 GT 256MB: Playing with Memory and G92

I would get the 512MB version personally unless you want to game at 1280x800 and below. The loss of 256mb really cripples the 8800GT according to the reviews.

The HD3850 I recommemnded is also a overclocked 512mb version as opposed to the standard clocked 256mb version used in the second review!! It is almost as fast as the HD3870.

Don't get a Hiper PSU. Hipers blowing seems as guaranteed as Bush ignoring global warming.

thanks guys for the fast replies..
i think that i have an copy of microsoft xp somewhere in my case
i forgot to add that if the price was how it is it would have to have a screen added to it aswell.... thats why i mentioned would like to keep a 512mb geforce 8800gt
as towards screen size... im not sure really probably a 19" monitor but maybe if the price is right a hd one would be good ???? im unsure about hd on computers tbh
also add me on msn to speak more quickly about it. m1k4_hakk1nen@hotmail.co.uk
    thanks

Screen itself can be another couple of hundred quid unfortunately....

Best bet, get a 256MB 8800GT and a 19" monitor that runs at 1280*768 and you won't miss the extra video ram, it's about the same cost as getting an 8800GT 512MB but at least it sticks within your budget.

yeah i have been scouting around for screens and after reading some reviews and lookign in a couple of past issues of custom pc magazine have decided on a samsung syncmaster 206bw (i think it is) unless anyone can recommend a 19" monitor that is cheaper and relatively the same quality

    Re: New pc... Decisions decisions...

Look on Ebay as there are some brand new NEC 19" screens for around 100-120 quid. They are S-IPS ones and are excellent quality.

You can get a Hannstar one for around 100 quid.

Have you considered overclocking?? An E4500 will easily reach 3ghz.

If you take this into account you can get the following instead for around 600quid too without and OS:

    Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 iP35 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard 136363 24 in stock £56.82 £56.82

    Samsung SpinPoint HD501LJ 500GB SATAII Hard Drive 16MB Cache - OEM 130454 50 in stock £51.00 £51.00

    Optiarc AD-7191S 20X DVD±RW/DL/RAM LightScribe Serial ATA Black Bare Drive - OEM 136070 72 in stock £16.76 £16.76

    Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 675MHz/PC2-5400 XMS Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL4(4-4-4-12) Heat Spreader Lifetime Warranty 098708 133 in stock £22.98 £22.98

    Hanspree CY199DP TFT Monitor 19" 700:1 250cd/m2 Silver/Black DVI 138535 446 in stock £86.80 £86.80

    Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.20GHz Socket 775 800FSB 2MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor 130486 329 in stock £63.77 £63.77

    Zotac 8800GT 512mb GDDR3 Dual DVI PCI-E Graphics Card £152.66 £152.66

If you want a really nice screen you could look around for Phillips 200W6CS.You can pick them up for under 150 quid on Ebay. They are also S-IPS or P-MVA too!! Most sub 200 quid panels are TN types which IMHO are not as good.

For a cooler I'd go with the Asaka ak-965x3 over the Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
At £11.74 it's cheaper and seems to be just as good (I say this as I've not found any review sites that have compaired the two directly)
    frosty tech review
