    Angry Aaaarrrgghh!

ok so my new RAM arrived today 2x2GB Corsair 6400

so i take my 2GB out (Corsair 5400) and put the 4GB onto my Asus P5W DH Deluxe, start the machine up and it shows only 3200KB! so after searching i enabled the smart memory management thingy.. great sees all 4GB

goto boot into Vista 64 Ultimate, and the machine bluescreens and resets itself - so i googled on the laptop and came up with i needed to install a patch, so took a stick out and rebooted with just the 2GB in the slot, and the same thing happend, so i ended up booting off of my old RAM to get the patch installed, but when i put the 4GB back in, i get the same thing, the machine reboots everytime it goes to load Vista...

    Re: Aaaarrrgghh!

You might be better off getting this moved to hardware - greater readership.

With the old ram installed can you download memtest86+? Should tell you whether you're RAM is faulty or not. Other thing to check is that you are running it at the correct voltage - some ram needs higher than the DDR2 spec to run at the speeds it is preset to

    Moved to hardware

Dave has covered the main two bases Try a bit more voltage and see if the boot process gets any further.
If not, disable restarting on reboots and find out what the BSOD says - it can save a lot of hassle if you know where Windows is blaming for the problem

    Re: Aaaarrrgghh!

First of all, you need to check the RAM voltage for definate. The higher spec Corsair memory always seems to need more voltage.

The second problem might arise if your old RAM doesn't need the extra voltage. If that's the case you might be better off selling off the other stuff and saving up for another 4GB kit.

Thanks to the tech help site on Welcome to Corsair (always read manufacturer's website!), I've got the following post for Asus boards

"Make sure that you have the latest Bios version and that you have a 1066 FSB CPU then load setup defaults and set the memory voltage to 2.1 Volts under Jumper Free ..."

    Cool Re: Aaaarrrgghh!

With Vista as your OS you can never relax. The latest Offering from Microsoft's DOS stable,Windows Vista has come under heavy criticism by numerous companies and groups.Criticisms of Windows Vista have included concerns about the security implications of the large amounts of new code, the inclusion of a number of new Digital Rights Management technologies aimed at restricting the copying of digital media, and the usability of the new User Account Control security technology.Additionally, reviewers have noted similarities between the Vista interface and that of Apple's Mac OS X operating system. Concerns have also been raised about many PCs not meeting "Vista Premium Ready" hardware requirements.
