hiper media chassis with geforce 8600gt

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had tried putting a geforce 8600gt in a hiper media chassis.

I'm looking at building a resonable gaming media pc in this chassis, and wondered if the psu, and cooling could cope?

Other components would include an athlon x2 4600+, and a cheapo motherboard.

After looking at the recent custom pc, I found that the only radeon graphics card that didn't draw more than 200w in a full system was the x1300, but that was with an overclocked core 2 duo x6800 (I think), so there may be some leeway.

If anyone can recommend a better single slot graphics card, which is as efficient as the 8600gt, so it doesn't kill the 200w psu, I would be grateful

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,

I've decided to take the jump and try this out anyway - the geforce 8600gt in the hiper media chassis, but run into an unexpected problem.

I can't find anywhere with the pci-express riser in stock!

I've got one pre-ordered with scan, and have had since 16/07, but although the website says they're in stock, they apparently aren't.

xcase.co.uk is the other place I've found that sells them, but they also don't have any stock.

Has anyone got any ideas where I might be able to uby one of these risers?

Also, I was wondering if one of the risers off www.linitx.com would work in the chassis, or if it needs to be the specific hiper riser?

Any help will be much appreciated, just waiting for this thing is driving me nuts!

Hi, I've got exactly the same case and same problem as you! I can't find any in stock. I can't see any reason why a different make of pci riser can't be bought. eclipsecomputers.co.uk used to have the pci express risers for the Hiper cases but i couldn't see them when i looked earlier. I originally wanted the pc to just be a media center pc but since wall mounting it and get surround sound more RAM and a wireless logitech gamepad i want more graphics power. I'm going to try my brothers geforce 6600gt in the pc soon and see how that runs. Any idea of power usage of that video card?

Re: hiper media chassis with geforce 8600gt

    Hi,

done a bit of research on the power usage, found this.

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vid...ion2006_7.html

It's got how the 6600gt compares to similar spec cards.

From custom pc, although the 6600gt isn't listed, the x1600xt radeon is, and the system consumes 200w, which would put the 6600gt at about 207 ish.

Provided you haven't crammed an overclocked core 2 extreme (3.19ghz from 2.93) into the case, the power consumption should be fine.

Found this seller on ebay in the USA who is selling pci-e risers.

    http://stores.ebay.co.uk/IT-Cables

The height of the riser is 23mm, which is taller than the one I got from linitx, but it may be measured differently.

Good luck with the geforce anyway, let me know how it goes!

I didn't even get chance to order one they went out of stock that quick!! I tried my brothers Gigabyte Geforce 7600GT last week, worked a treat! Did a 3dmark03 on the system before and after and it raised from 1212 to 7582!!! A Massive improvement!!

Re: hiper media chassis with geforce 8600gt

Hi don;t know if I'm a bit late but i've got one of these cases and i'm using the flexi riser (7cm) from linITX, it's a little long and requires some finessing and squashing with an ati radeon all in wonder 2006 to get it into the case, but it works a treat. only issue is heat but I'm planning on using a little super glue and some 40mm fans to aid heat dissipation.

    Hi ed_jrgibbs

Could you post some photos of the cable riser installation please or send them to me privately. I am intrigued how you have secured the cable/card.

I was looking at that riser too, but couldn't figure out where I would put that much cable, as I thought it would be obscured by the back panel outputs from the motherboard. Have you squeezed it under the graphics card? Pics would definately be appreciated

Looks like xcase have got the risers in stock!

Already ordered mine, doubt they'll last for long given how long we've been waiting for them!

    Hey pick...

If you ordered one yesterday you are one day ahead of me so if you don't get one then obviously I won't. But has your order been processed yet or dare I say it...dispatched?

    Keep me informed mate.

    Cheers 50ft jesus

    Hi 50ft jesus,

I got a text (good service!) last night to confirm it's been dispatched!

Hope you get one sorted too.

Re: hiper media chassis with geforce 8600gt

It's installed! Seems like it's taken forever!

Anyway, the geforce 8600gt is in, I'm running vista aero, I've played an hd video (x264 codec) and no immediate problems with overheating. I'm downloading the dx10 lost planet demo (not expecting miracles from the card, but want to give it a work out) and a sega rally demo to see how things go! Fingers crossed, should have a PS3 beater sitting under my TV! (although already got a 360, so technically already got one?)

Good luck with your system 50ft J, let me know how it goes

Re: hiper media chassis with geforce 8600gt

Oh no! It's not a happy ever after (yet) The performance was pretty good while I was playing sega rally revo, until the 2nd lap. At this point, the graphics card throttled heavily, due to the heat, and the game suddered to a halt, producing a slide show about 1 frame a second of a car crashing repeatedly into the barriers :-(

Going to make a quick journey to PCworld tonight, to get a couple of 40mm fans to cram into the system, and try and get some airflow going over the graphics card. I'll keep you posted.
