got a viewsonic 20 inch 8ms tft which i think will do me for a while longer i really only want to upgrade to be able to play warhammer online when its released feburary time... im looking for a case at minimum as i have a centuron atm but its a little cramped inside and not that well built...
any ideas on what could boost performance/graphics within that price?
Really a new graphics card will not perform well with your rig and you would really need a better CPU to get the most out of it.

This comes under £400 + Carriage but that means no new case HDD must be SATA.

jesus that memory is cheap for 2gb... why is that? is it cuz its got bad timings?
DDR2 is dirt cheap at the moment. The timings on those are actually slightly better than average (4-4-4-12 vs 5-5-5-12 or higher) though the official specs say the RAM needs 2.1V which is a bit high but not exactly unusual for faster than average RAM.Originally Posted by Destroyer^

You could probably squeeze an E6750 into the budget with the 8800GT 512MB.
If you do want a case you could go cheaper on the motherboard, CPU, or Graphics card.
CPU wise you could go to something like E2180 which costs £50 and overclock to above 3.0GHz.
Graphics Wise you could go for the HD3850pro. It's a great card for lower resolutions. Not as capable as the 8800GT 512mb but perhaps better than the 256mb.
I would stick with the P35 chipset (abit if it were me) but Something like a P31 chipset board isn't bad and they are a bit cheaper.

DDR3 is out. Stupidly over priced and not a lot of motherboards support it. It's also not really any faster from what i've read.

I don't honestly know about the differences. It's probably not that good of an overclocker compared to the P35 which is very good.

DDR2 is cheap because of a direct result of Vista.
Vista didnt take off as expected (for some unknown reason) and all the stories read that Vista needed lots of memory.
The manufacturers predicted that they would sell many times more because of this.
People got afraid of Vista = Companies got lumbered with way too much stock = Low prices to shift it all.
I think once SP1 for Vista goes completely live, the fairytales about it being unstable will be broken and the prices of DDR2 will go up again.
Just my thoughts.

I would say all that upgrade cost is utterly over the top
You could overclock your current CPU, and it would probably be fine for your needs. Really, it is single core but it isn't that bad. Zero cost options are always nice.
If you spent 35 quid you can go dual core (I am assuming you have a Socket939 motherboard). You might want a cheap fan to put on that, and these are wonderful value.
Buy another 2GB of RAM to put you up to 3GB total.
Keep the graphics card money until the game actually comes out, graphics cards will have dropped by then in price and you will get a lot more for your money.
This route gives you over 300 quid to spend on a graphics card and case, so you can get the best of those
chears for the help think i pretty much know what to get unless you can suggest anything better
btw lookign at scan i dunno why the intel Core 2 Duo E6420, Socket 775, 2.13 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Conroe Core, 4MB Cache, Retail is more expensive then the intel Core 2 Duo E6550, S775, 2.33 GHz, 1333MHz FSB, Conroe Core, 4MB Cache, Retail
any1 know? except does the lower fsb make that much of a difference?
The reason is the multiplier on the e6420 is x8 where as the e6550 is only x7
So the e6420 is actually the better overclocker.
Although the e6550 has G0 stepping so uses less power at idel only.
I'd agree with DanceswithUnix that it's a little over the top, I'd deffinately agree a better cpu and some more memory.
MMO's tend to be more cpu and memory dependent that gpu dependent like FPS's.
