PSU advice/recommendations
Hi
Just upgraded my PC going down the barebones route. My new specs are:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Inno3D GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
ASUS P5N32-E SLI
2048MB DDR2 800MHz Dual Channel
WD Caviar 2x160GB SATA RAID 0
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Fatal1ty
Hiper 530W Silent
Thermal Take Silver Aluminium Tsunami Dream
Windows Vista Ultimate x64
I've been having some issues on certain games, wherby they crash out randomly, to the desktop. Oddly it doesn't happen on some games like Crysis and World of Warcraft. I've ruled out overheating graphics card and ran some memtests on the ram and that appears to be fine.
So I'm left with the finger pointing firmly at the PSU as the culprit!
Currently its a Hiper Type M 530W. I don't believe this is enough wattage for my system, or if it is, then its pushing close to its limits leaving not a lot spare.
So I'm looking for a new PSU and after some recommendations from you guys ;)
Factors I need to consider:
- wattage - go for biggest affordable or will xxxxW suffice?
- cost - looking at spending £100 give or take.
- quietness - finally got myself a nice quiet PC so would like to replace with another quiet PSU.
- modular - should I look at modular ones or not?
I'd be extremely grateful of your recommendations.
Many thanks ;)
Re: PSU advice/recommendations
I would look at the corsair series of PSUs, they are highly rated, the Corsair HX520w would be a good choice, or the 620w version if you want the extra wattage. These PSUs are modular which is really handy and are really quiet.
520w should be plenty for that system, I've seen someone run an overclocked Q6600 and an 8800GT on a 300w PSU, it was a quality Antec Fanless one I think
Re: PSU advice/recommendations
Cheers ;)
That's one I had shortlisted.
Thermaltake ToughPower 850W Modular Power Supply
Antec Quattro 850W PSU
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
All come in around the £100 mark, give or take.
Re: PSU advice/recommendations
I would go for the 520w HX tbh but all of the one's you have picked are fine, just a little bit of an overkill.
Hipers are known to be naff so don't worry about technically dropping 10W in output the 520w Is plenty enough for that system.
Re: PSU advice/recommendations
I would say even a Corsair HX450 is fine for that setup, it is not even SLI. That system will only draw 350W at maximum load.
Have you tried reinstalling / updating your drivers, as well as patching your crashing games?
Re: PSU advice/recommendations
One other possible reason for getting the 620w model is by using barely half it's capacity, it runs cooler and thus quieter. In my system I never hear the PSU fan (or any fan actually) :)
Re: PSU advice/recommendations
I had a number of similar problems on my UK system with the same PSU. When I replaced it, after it blew, these problems disappeared. My US system is similar to yours and runs fine on the Corsair HX520.
