WinXP 2nd hd only in PIO mode

Hey, I have two hd in my system, a WD1200LB (primary master with WinXP) and a 20 GB Maxtor (sec. slave). The Maxtor will only run in PIO mode, irrespective of setting "DMA if possible". I changed it to primary slave, which did not help. Any workaround?

Are you using nVidia's SW IDE drivers by any chance?

Also, have you tried running it as secondary Master?

Dear Buff,
once I gave the Nvidia drivers a try, but then the system hardly booted any more. So, I stuck with the standard drivers. I will try the config with the drive as sec master. Thank you!

i had many probs with winxp with this. first check what type of computer winxp thinks you have - should be top in device manager, apci or something like that. also how is the maxtor plugged in? is it on the same ide cable as the other drive? is the cable capable of ata100/133 (they have 40 wires, but with another 40 wires in between those, which are grounded, to reduce interfeerace) or even ata33/66?
check in bios if youve got any options for chosing the dma on each channel, my nf7-s has the option.

OK, as you are using the MS IDE drivers the other thing that you might try is to uninstall the secondary IDE channel in Device Manager & let it redetect it (scan for hardware changes).

redetecting IDE does not help. I have now given the hd to a friend to test it in his computer. Let's see whether it is a problem of the hd or of my system.

HI Lisandrea , i had the same problem - this fixed it for me

Anyway, fire up regedit and search for the following key...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

OR

do a search for "IDE ATA/ATAPI" and it sould bring you to this key

the sub key "0001" is for the primary channel and "0002" is for the secondary channel

to change to UDMA mode... the following must be set/changed

"MasterDeviceTimingMode" with the Value in Hexadecimal : "2010" (OR decimal 8208)
"MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed" with the Value in Hexadecimal: "ffffffff"

the same for SlaveDeviceTimingMode and SlaveDeviceTimingModeAllowed and also for the Secondary IDE channel. But be sure that you only change those that have devices installed on it, I'm not sure what happens if you do.

Also REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY before you try this trick!!!!
Do so by going to File->export registry.

I sorted it out. One of the pins of the IDE connector interface at the hd was bent and did not fit. In place again - all fine with udma5.
But now my Mitsumi CD burner produces PIO problems. Freshly detected in WinXP it is running in Multiword1, but the moment I insert a CD, it will take one minute to start reading it, and then in device manager things are changed to PIO mode.
