Question OCZ780MXS OCZ ModXStream 780w Noisy

Another question someone might be able to help me with before I do an RMA!

Does anyone find the OCZ ModXStream 780W noisy? From what I understand it should be a fairy quiet power supply but I find it louder than anything in my case!

I have spoken to OCZ using their forums and they have authorised me to get an RMA but what if that is the standard noise of the fan then I would be wasting my time..... from reading other posts I found that on other models the fan is a duff or the fan speed controller isn't working correctly, seemingly a fault with some power supplys. However when I checked the fan specs I think it goes up to 38db which is loud....

If anyone has one and could comment I would be greatful

Just for interest does anyone know how the powerswap thingy works with OCZ.... do you have to pay postage to send it back? (United States?) does the courier deliver one the same time as picking up?

    Thanks again,
    Andy

Too add to my post I have swapped it for my Seasonic SS_600HT (600W) and that is quiet... so something can't be right surely?

Re: OCZ780MXS OCZ ModXStream 780w Noisy

I've always found my 700w gameXstream less than silent. It's not terrible above all the other racket of my PC but not silent as it suggested.

I believe you resgister the RMA, they send you a new one and then you send the old one back. It's not as far as USA for us, germany I think.

Re: OCZ780MXS OCZ ModXStream 780w Noisy

    Ok Thanks.

This was a statement from OCZ regarding their StealthXstream range, could be the ModXStream has the same fan...

"For those with noise issues we have an official statement from OCZ.

“The StealthXStream’s current fan is performing within specification and is designed to cool the PSU’s core for enhanced stability and reliability. As with all products we care greatly about our customer’s feedback and are looking into the possible implementation of an equally powerful, yet quieter fan solution for an upcoming revision. A good customer experience is our most important mission, and if you have any questions or concerns regarding any aspect of your StealthXStream you are encouraged to contact customer support. We will take care of all our customers and are happy to address any issues directly.”

OCZ staff are here to help you, if you feel you have issues with your PSU please post here and we will do our best to look after you."

Re: OCZ780MXS OCZ ModXStream 780w Noisy

Oh Dear, doing a bit more searching the fan seems to be the same as the the OCZ GameXstream 700W Power Supply (Fan rated for up to 2,500 rpm at 12V 38dba) so er loud at high loads / temps I would imagine.

Re: OCZ780MXS OCZ ModXStream 780w Noisy

The thing is when ya go for near silent/quiet operation for a media pc that humming is annoying the case isn't best desined for air flow and is quite compact hence my other thread for a cpu cooler, I have just purchased some more odds and sods for cooling fans etc ... and now that has reached over £100.

After reading reviews for the ModXstream and lots of reviews say quiet + OCZ saying whisper technology you would imagine silence, or near as!

At this rate I might aswell stick it in the loft with 30M KVM leads lol

Re: OCZ780MXS OCZ ModXStream 780w Noisy

ok lets put it this way how come my 600w seasonic fan can run at 800rpm and be next to silent but yet the ocz is much more noisy and imagine runs at over 1500rpm same hardware same wattage, can only be crappy fan/controller...

I think you've hit the nail on the head

Would you consider voiding the warranty and swapping the fan?

IIRC OCZ only cross ship in North AMerica now. They used to take your Credit Card details before the X-Ship so you wouldnt rip them off aswell.
