Re: Help needed, built new pc but will not run

tried it with on stick of RAM? and in every possible slot?

    That RAM likes it's 2.1v - 2.2v.

Also it may be shorting out. Try building it outside the case with the motherboard on some cardboard (mobo box)

Re: Help needed, built new pc but will not run

    Thanks Mike,
I have got mobo out of case and have tried both sticks of ram in each slot (separately), but still no joy. The L.E.D. stays on and you can hear the Psu humming as though the mobo is shutting down the supply (the psu fan doesn't get time to run). Any other ideas as to what it could be?
    Cheers

can you try another gfx card?
there have been a few problems with the new PCI-E 2.0 cards not working properly in older standard slots.

Re: Help needed, built new pc but will not run

what did you replace it with?
obviously it needs a gfx card of some kind to run.

You do have the main 24-pin ATXPWR, the ATX12V1 & the PCI-E power connector into the gfx card connected?

Re: Help needed, built new pc but will not run

fans are all connected? make double sure. disconnect them and connect them if need be. gfx is connected (if needs 4pin power from psu)? easily missed. Make double sure.

Also, power button connector and hd led's etc.., are they connected the right way according to manual? It could be something obvious.

Re: Help needed, built new pc but will not run

    pp05 gave me an idea.

Is the second power cable plugged into the motherboard?

a 4 or 8 pin cable/plug usually at the top of the mobo near the cpu.

Re: Help needed, built new pc but will not run

Tried everything all you guys said apart from psu, all to no avail, looks like I'll have to try another psu. Just one little note, when I test the psu out of the system pins 16 and 17 on 24pin plug bring on the psu and all voltages are reading correctly. Am I right in thinking that the power switch is momentary, and then the mobo latches in the supply if all is ok with board? The system never gets to POST it is that quick to stop.

Re: Help needed, built new pc but will not run

If I were you, I'd RMA the motherboard back for testing. Yes, it can cost you some cash if it's not the problem, but quite frankly I don't think this is something you can solve yourself unless you have access to a stack of spare PC parts to test things out.

Just before you do this though, I would strip everything down completely and start again. Make a checklist and follow it and double check every stage. Even simple things like not plugging in your fan's CPU lead properly can cause this kind of problems.

One thing does occur to me though, can you get it to boot up when you hold the power switch in (or does your board have an on button built in)? If you can, then perhaps it's as simple as reversing the direction on your power switch lead.

Re: Help needed, built new pc but will not run

I have had this issue several times with my ASUS P5K-VM board, the LED on the board stays on, but when I press the power button, just for half a second everything runs and off again. After everything, I just tried keeping the power button pressed for 10 seconds, then released it, then pressed again and the PC powered up fine. Since then, ive had the issue once or twice again, and if it helps, it happens when my PC shuts down suddenly, due to power outage or my brother messing with the extension , anyways, try that and see if it works for you, its far fetched, but worked for me.

Re: Help needed, built new pc but will not run

My dad's PC started doing that, and it turned out to be a faulty PSU. The system was about 3 years old at the time, and I have never heard of it happening with a new PSU. It would not hurt to try though if there is someone you could borrow a PSU from.

As others have said, you will need a graphics card of some sort for the system to post. An old PCI card will do just as well as any PCIe one.

Have you connected a speaker to the headers on the board for one? I don't mean the sound card output, but the case speaker that bleeps when you boot? In the back of your motherboard manual you should find a table of bleep codes for when the board fails to post.

For example for the Award BIOS in mine, the table says that 1long then 1 short bleep means a RAM or motherboard error.

Re: Help needed, built new pc but will not run

Thanks for all comments guys, I did attach a speaker to the system but it stops so quick that nothing comes out of the speaker and I did try the bit about holding the power on for a while but no joy. I had a word with the techie guys from *CWor*d today and they told me to try some different memory and if it didn't work they could have a look for £20, if I do this will it invalidate my guarantee on the mobo? I will be taking my mobo, memory, gfx card and psu only. What do you guys think?
