    Question Heatsink Height

Does anyone know how heatsinks are measured? (As in from the feet to the highest part or from the CPU to the top of the heatsink)

Reason for this I have a very tight squeeze case and need a new heatsink + Fan for my Intel quad core, I have a Asus Striker Extreme motherboard in a THermaltake VF7001BNS case and I am very tight for space and it needs to be silent as it is a media PC.
I have 13cm from the cpu to the top of the case so bearing in mind alot of heatsink are 12.5cm>+ so depending how heatsinks are measured I might have more or less space ......

I have included some links too show how tight i am for space, bare in mind that top bar can be removed, its a strengthening bar for the case but that should not be a problem.

    Any help would be great!

    Thanks,
    Andy

    Re: Heatsink Height

    Something I've wondered about aswell

If I were you I'd consider one of the good 92mm fan based coolers.
The thermalright Ultima-90 is suposed to be exellent and it only mesured as 115mm tall Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

Or one of the horizontal fan coolers (eg the Scythe Samurai Master for the sort of thing I mean) however I'm not sure about theses and while shorter the coolers&heatpipes on the Asus Striker Extreme might cause problems with both the heat pipes on the coolers and trying to get the pushpins in.

Its not 115mm tall its 137mm, the thing with a lot of shops and websites they advertise these heatsinks with dimensions without saying which one is the height/width/depth etc.... so when they put them in a different order you think it might fit

here is a link with dimensions of a heatsink,

    THanks though...

    Re: Heatsink Height

Its possible i guess the thermalright si-128_se could fit but it depends if the main heatink goes over the heatsinks around the CPU...

    Re: Heatsink Height

Ok, to my previous comment someone has a si-128 with a asus striker extreme so looking at the dimensions of both the si-128-se and the si-128 they are the same, so that should fit dunno how good it will be? I know the tower heatsinks are much better now but i don't think I can fit one.

Another one i looked at was the Akasa EVO 98 ( AK-921 ) But some sites the measurements are 101.7 mm x 93.6 mm x 67.8 mm others say 138 x 106 x 73mm........ how ??? which one is it or do they measure them from different parts>?

    Re: Heatsink Height

Ahh sorry 115mm wide not tall my mistake

Other coolers you could look at
Zalman CNPS9500-AT, not the cheapest but should fit
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

ASUS Triton 77, not sure about this one as I cannot find any reviews

Also the Silverstone Nitrogen series coolers
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

Or a standard block with heatpipe cooler like the ocz tempest although I don't know how well they compair.
Techgage - OCZ Tempest CPU Cooler

FrostyTech - Heatsink & PC Cooling Reviews is a good place to look for cooler reviews

EDIT: oh and good move in checking the design specs, I think you'll want to try to do that for any cooler you seirously look at due to your restrictions.

    Re: Heatsink Height

I think the silverstone will fit, had a look at a review and it seems ok I think I will go for the lite version which comes without a fan as the silverstone fan is quite loud at full speed.

It should clear the heatsinks fingers crossed! It clears the Ram on this board and the heatsinks on the striker is just a little higher

    Re: Heatsink Height

To be honest it seems like the stock Intel fan should be quite good in there? Or any other heatsinks with the fan blowing downward.

The "ring" MOSFET heatsink and the hole on the top seems to suggest so.

    Re: Heatsink Height

I have had a bad experience with a Silverstone SST-NT06 Nitrogen cooler. Basically it cooled worse that the stock Intel cooler it replaced. The fan was very loud a full speed, and if you used the supplied fan controller to reduce the speed, then it did not get enough voltage to start the fan when the PC was switched on.

If you still want to try a Silverstone SST-NT06 cooler after that warning, then you can buy mine from me for £20. PM me.

Hmmm, so the silverstone isn't that gd then. I have been looking at the the Enzotech Ultra-x and maybe chaging the fan for a quiet one... silentx 120mm 18DB .....

The intel stock fan is loud, I have just purchased new case fans which are all under 20db at the cost of £65

Thermaltake Big Typhoon Heatpipe Universal CPU Cooler at TheCoolingShop

This one will be tight, but from what I can see in your pictures, it should *just* fit, as in my system it comes about level with the edge of the PSU. Since you have the large hole on the top, airflow also won't be a problem as that fan draws from the top.

It's also quiet and effeciant (best estimates place my typical core speed between 30 and 35 degrees, running a Q6600 at 3GHz.)

If not, there's a similar model available that's slightly smaller, though I have no idea on the effeciancy or noise level.

    Re: Heatsink Height

Doh I overlooked the big typhoon as I was sure it was taller than that.

Although just double checked, it's 105mm without fan, so 105+25=130mm without fan guard so it's going to be very tight
Shame as it's a very good cooler.

The mini typhoon is 130mm tall with it's fan

Any cooler you get is going to be noisey at stock, simply because the size restrictions limit you to a 92mm or 80mm fan based cooler which are never going to be as quite as a 120mm fan based cooler.
If you are willing to mod the case or cooler to get a 120mm in then you should be able to come up with something quite & effective.

Another one to look at are the orb/flower style coolers
Eg the Zalman CNPS7500-Cu orThermaltake Max Orb
But they may suffor height problems with that motherboard and you tall ram coolers.

    Smile Re: Heatsink Height

Hmmm, well i bit the bullet and bought a Thermaltake Typhoon, it will be tight for space but fingers crossed it will fit!

The top of the case has air holes anyway so the fan will suck in fresh air rather than warm case air.

I think its a risk but aslong as it squeezes in i should be fine, if not I have to try something else, otherwise I feel there might be some tools being used to make way for bigger things....
