Upgrading my PC, I need some advice
I'm planning on upgrading my PC in a couple of days and I was looking for some advice.
I have a budget of £370 and the PC will mainly be used for gaming.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 £76.02
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
RAM: 2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400, CAS 4-4-4-12 £35.24 (On Today Only)
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
GFX: Gigabyte 8800GTS £198.58 (On Today Only)
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L or Abit IP-35E
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L £58.86
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
Abit IP-35E £58.62
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
Total = £368.70
The rest will come from my old system - Antec TrueBlue2 480W PSU, Hitachi 160GB Sata1 HD, DVD-ROM and Aopen tower case.
I plan on getting a quad core in about 9 months when they are more affordable, I'll also get another 2GB memory then as well.
For the motherboard I can't decide between the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L or the Abit IP-35E?
Both are about the same price and I have heard good things about each of them, I'm leaning towards the gigabyte more as it comes with all solid capacitors and also supports 1066MHz memory (not that I need this but maybe useful for the future). Hopefully Scan have the revision 2 version of the Gigabyte.
I'm considering overclocking if I feel I need some extra power, is the E4500 anygood for overclocking and would I get a decent overclock with the standard Intel fan?
I've currently got an Antec TrueBlue2 480W powersupply which is about 15 months old, will this be enough to power this system?
Specifications for the PSU can be found here: Antec.com - Antec.com - TPII 480/480 Blue Specsheet
I'd be grateful for any advice you can offer.
Re: Building a new system, Need some advice
Take a look at these first:
CPU: Intel CPU Pentium DualCore E2140 2x1.60GHz 800MHz 1Mb LGA775 Retail (3yr Manufacturer's Warranty) - BX80557E2140 - www.microdirect.co.uk ....Its a decent little overclocker and almost half the price of your original choice. You wouldnt notice the difference.
Memory: OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1024) Special Operation Edition DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz 5-5-5-12 Dual Channel Memory Spec Ops Camouflage Heatspreader - OCZ2SOE8002GK - www.microdirect.co.uk ......Decent stuff this and only £30. This is all down to personal preference as memory is much the sameness.
Motherboard: Abit motherboard IP35 Dark Raider Intel P35 LGA775 Quad core / Core 2 Duo / Core 2 Extreme PCI-E x16 SATA 3G RAID Firewire Gigabit LAN ATX - IP35 - www.microdirect.co.uk ...This is a slightly better board but the cash saved on the CPU more than allows for this.
GPU: Asus Extreme 8800GTS 512MB DDR3, PCI-E, Dual DVI, HDTV Out, Retail - EN8800GTS/HTDP/512M/ - www.microdirect.co.uk ...Nice card. The GTS G92;s are the way to go now. If you want to save a few quid though then the 8800GT also decent enough. Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
Buying the 8800GTS over the GT that comes to £356.89 +shipping.
Getting the 8800GT comes to just over £330 + shipping. (I agree with you though and stick with the GTS)
Hope that helps.
Note: Im definitely not an ATI fan but they have got a fanstic range of cards at the moment at a very good price. Just as a link look at this: HIS ATI Radeon HD 3870 XT ICEQ3 512MB GDDR4 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail These are performing very well at the moment and ATI seem to be doing far better than nVidia with their drivers atm so this card, i think, should cut the gap right down on the 8800GTS again soon.
Re: Building a new system, Need some advice
I don't want to order from Microdirect as last time I had a bad experience, I paid for next day delivery and my stuff never turned up. I couldn't get in contact with anyone at Microdirect for 2 weeks. It wasn't until I contacted Barclaycard about getting my money back that MD bothered to contact me.
I got my stuff a couple of days later.
Is there anypoint in getting the IP35 over the IP35E as I don't need Raid or Firewire?
Re: Building a new system, Need some advice
IP-35 has a very slightly better cooling solution for overclocking but it will make little difference really, so no, get the E.
I would get Geil RAM from overclockers but thats me. OCZ is good to. Corsair is good if you don't need to overclock passed the RAM's stock speeds which you rarely will and certainly not with the E2140.
Re: Building a new system, Need some advice
As Mike and Blitz have said i would go with the E21** but i would maybe put the extra fiver or so in and get the 1.8 rather than 1.6. Admitadly not a great deal of benefit from it but just seems to make sense to me.
Other than that you seem to have got it all spot on first guess.
Not totally sure about the PSU, i think it will be ok even with a modest overclock on but i have heard mixed things about the older Antec PSUs
