Building a new computer

Hope somebody can help/ I do not have much money to spend on a new setup. I'm looking for a motherboard and processor to go along with the 2 gig of DDR2 memory I have. I have no preference when it comes to AMD or Intel. Will mostly be used for games I am playing now which are Titan Quest and Heroes of Might and Magic 5. For whatever reason, my current computer is really jerky when playing them. My current computer is a Pentium 4, 2.8 mhz with 1 gig of ddr memory and a ATI x1600pro 512mb video card. Thanks to any of you who can give me some ideas for a motherboard and processor. THANKS!!!!!!!!!

I think if gaming if your main concern the graphics card might be a worthwhile upgrade.

What is your budget?

You could do a great upgrade for around £180 including a graphics card if you're willing to overclock a bit.

Cheapest recommended is
E2140 Pentium dual core 1.6Ghz £40 and £45 for a P31 gigabyte motherboard.

2.0Ghz costs £10 more

Better boards can be had for about £70

Graphics wise you could get an ATi HD3850pro for around £95 which is awesome for the money.

mobo+cpu+gfx upgrade could be done very cheaply to get better performance but it might be worth spending around the £200 mark to get best value for money. The ATi 38x cards are a very good buy at the moment but I dont think there are any AGP versions. If dx10 isnt an issue the 7600gt is a decentish buy at <£50 or the more powerful ATi x1950pro for ~£80.

I read somewhere that there are AGP versions for the 38xx series in the works, but and should be around sometime this month, plus they will be more expensive than their equivalent PCI-e versions, so that might negate any advantage of staying with AGP.

an X1950 pro however would be a good upgrade, I have one at the moment and its done well (but currently selling on ebay in case you interested heh).

Re: Building a new computer

As for your orignal Mobo and CPU query, I would back StaffsMike, either get the CPU he recommended or this one, "Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2180, S775, 2.0GHz" its for £55.21, as for the motherboard, id say ASUS P5K-VM (because I have it ), im very happy with it, over clocks well, will do good with your DDR2 ram.

Others are right with the video card upgrade suggestion, you might want to give it a look as well.
