    Recommend me some components please....

    Hi,
I'm looking to put together the following setup:

    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 G0 SLACR, 95W, S775, 2.40 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache, Retail
    Mobo: Abit IP-35 Pro, iP35 Express, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX
    RAM: 2x 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-18
OS drive tray: IcyBox Trayless IB-168SK-B SATA to SATA HDD, Black Colour
    OS disk: 320 Gb Samsung HD321KJ Spinpoint T166, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 9 ms, NCQ
    Data disk: 1000GB HGST(IBM/Hitachi) OA35772 Ultrastar A7K1000, SATA II, 7200rpm, 32MB Cache, 8.2ms, NCQ

    Can anyone recommend me:

Cooler - will eventually be water-cooled but temporarily need a good aftermarket cooler
Case - as above, I eventually want to mount watercooling in it
    PSU - preferably modular
Optical drive - preferably quiet - my current one sounds like a hoover when it spins up!

I'll also be transferring my 8800GTX into this system.

The reason for the OS drive tray is that it's going to be running a lot of different OSes, some of which may not play nicely with each other.

    Cheers....

Re: Recommend me some components please....

The samsung dvd drives are quiet especially in the antec P182. The P182 has water cooling holes but I doubt there is enough room to do a proper watercooling job with it.Something like the silverstone TJ07 would be better for that.

PSU. I would go with the 520w Corsair HX for all that but it might want a bit more grunt (not sure how much watercooling requires)..the 620w perhaps.

I'm assuming the 8GB of RAM is for all those OS's running at the same time, VMware? Otherwise WTF!!?

another vote for Samsung ODD & you might as well go SATA.

Thermalright Ultima-90 is a good blend of performance without costing too much (the Ultra-120 eXtreme is 50% dearer).
You'll need to add a 92/120mm fan to it but you get to choose the fan to suit you rather than whatever comes with it..

forgot about the HSF. I like the scythe's, the ninja is my personal choice. Very quiet and effective but a fair bit bitter than the the ultima90. Can't go wrong with either imo.

    You reckon?
All the reviews that I have seen put the Ultima 90 alongside the TRUE & the TRUE beats the Ninja.

Re: Recommend me some components please....

    Thanks for that guys.

@staffsMike: Yeah, I will be running quite a few VM machines from time to time - testing Solaris X86 clustering and Win2k3 AD/clients. Although 8GB for £100, can't really see a reason not to tbh....

@Buff: Samsung ODD? Did I miss something? Also, for the CPU fan, I'm really after performance, and quietness - cost is a secondary factor..

Just plain old tired i'm affraid lol

Since the ultima doesn't come with a fan you could specify whatever fits your need, scythe s-flex push a lot of air while remaining very quiet. 800rpm or 1200rpm will be best for quiet.
I've bought a few of the scythe ninja's now since technically they can be used passive although not when overclocking. They come with a fairly decent quiet fan

I would deffinatly go with the corsair PSU for silence as they are prefect for that.

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
this is the dvd writer I was talking about.

Yeah RAM is dirt cheap lol

You asked about a quiet optical drive - ODD= Optical Disk Drive.

    Great, thanks!

Just to confirm, the IP-35 is likely to take the new chips coming at some point in the new year too right?

It'll take the 1333mhz 45nm quads yeah. 1600mhz fsb, maybe not.

Re: Recommend me some components please....

If you want the best CPU cooler available go for the thermalrake ultra 120 extreme and put a scythe 120mm fan on it, all the benches ive seen show that coming out on top, but make sure you buy a fan as it doesent come with one. If you intend to OC your card i would really recommend a aftermarket cooler as they can get very hot, or so i hear wish i had a GTX

    All the best to you

For a case, I would definately recommend the Antec P182. I got one myself, and I can't hear anything on my PC.

What about the zalmans? I personally use the Scythe infinity, which is absolutely massive (it bearly fitted in my P182.

Re: Recommend me some components please....

@cabooseUK - the 8800GTX doesn't need an aftermarket cooler to overclock. I think I got mine to about 620Mhz core (from 580) with no extra cooling - and mine's in a Shuttle .

@mosherben - I had an Antec P180 before, and whilst it was OK, I didn't like the separate PSU compartment - would probably be OK with a modular PSU though I guess.

Assuming that its the same form factor(ish) though, I'd never squeeze watercooling in there though....
