    I just toasted a Athlon x2 5000 Black edition

What an afternoon having received some MX2 I thought I'd try it out on my Black edition. So removed freezer 64 clean off tim with akasa tim cleaner replace with MX2 reapply freezer 64, connect and turn on power.

Boots in to windows start asus prob cpu temp 65 C, Reach for the power turn off pc.

restart go into bois yep 65 C shown there as well overheat alarm starts as we reach 75 pc turns itself off.

Repeat remove clean reapply. Some thing happens. Repeat until pc no longer boots.

Several hours latter give up and put in my athlon 4600 works first time temp 33 c under full load with two prime 95s.

So could of the cleaner got under the heat spreader and damaged the tim under there?

What else could have gone wrong?

Now Birthday next month so do I

option 1 go for another 5000 Black edition or 6400 BE

    or

option 2 pick up a phemon (may be the Black edition)

    What do you think?

Well, personally, if I was you, I'd probably be a) very drunk and b) crying my eyes out about now.

Re: I just toasted a Athlon x2 5000 Black edition

Yep they were two options but my wife just came home and wanted to know why the pc was in peices on the kitchen work surface and I had to admit to waisting an £80 cpu.

She was not pleased having been in Cardiff all day shopping (which she hates) and taking our daughter to the panto.

If it is not broke then do not fix it!

that is weird :/ when you removed the heatsink after high temps it looked like the MX2 had been making a good contact yes?

id only go for the phenom if they get the fixed revision out by the time you come to buy it. as thats when i shall be buying one

    Unlucky mate...

The phenom is probably worth it if you want to keep the PC for a couple of years...

But first make sure that this CPU is definitely dead...

Very possible. There is a small gap/vent along the edge where the heatspreader meets the cpu pcb/packaging. Do not allow solvents to contact this vent.

I've done this to two chips, the only cure is to cut off the heatspreader and mount the heatsink directly to the die, which can be quite a hassle, and obviously is pointless to do on an already dead chip.

If the system powered on then immediately shut off, the CPU could still be ok. They are supposed to turn off automatically when reaching a certain temp. If there is little tim left between the die and heatspreader this temp could be reached almost instantly.

Yea the contact seemed fine spread evenly around the surface, but there did seem to be some black areas in the tim right at the edge of the cpu.

Re: I just toasted a Athlon x2 5000 Black edition

Oralpain How difficult was it too remove the heat spreader? What heatsink did you use?

any body else tried removing the IHS? If so will my freezer 64 still work?

daniel.phillips I know I broke it so I can not send it back it does not seem right.

SiM I will try it next weekend once its dried out.

Re: I just toasted a Athlon x2 5000 Black edition

Unless you soaked the chip in the cleaner I wouldn't have thought that you would be able to remove (dissolve?) TIM between IHS and chip. My first though was HSF not installed properly first time after applying MX-2 and that has killed the chip especially if volts were set for your overclock.

I presume you reset bios to factory defaults etc and retried? I would say you haven't got much to lose in removing the IHS if all else fails. I'm sure there are guides available on the web.

I hope you get a bit of luck and get that chip working again.

Re: I just toasted a Athlon x2 5000 Black edition

    Nothing lost nothing gained

I removed the IHS and there was no evidance that the tim cleaner had reached the chip there was still plenty over it.

Now I have a bare chip tomorrow I will see if my freezer 64 will work direct to it.
