    Re: Another Newbie System Build

Back on track . Someone said don't go for the Western Digital Raptor?? Surely just getting a small drive for games and maybe the OS and then the rest going on the Seagate would be ok, or is there a better/cheaper alternative.

Are the problems with 64bit Vista and X-Fi fixed?

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

Creative still haven't produced good Vista drivers, but the card should at least work. Driver details here: http://ask.americas.creative.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=ww_english_add,U={B8F60310-DA4F-11D3-94F4-00500463020E},Company={CEAE216D-8719-4C00-AC9F-03BC258F7B70},d=1130251443648,VARSET=ws:

As far as the Raptor is concerned the 74Gb is not so fast compared to modern HDDs, which have bigger caches and denser platters. The sweet spot is 500Gb. Just partition the drive and use the first partition for OS and games. You'd hardly tell the difference - except to your pocket.

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

Someone was saying how Vista booting much quicker on a raptor than on their 7200RPM 16MB Cache 320Gb Harddrive?

Also, If I plan to upgrade in the future should I go for the 620HX PSU instead?

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

    Just seen this amazing deal:

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

A GT for about £100 surely I could get these in SLI and they would be better than 1 GTS?

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

I would stick with 520w, it's such a good power supply i'm pretty sure it will be all you need for a long time.

Graphics wise.. SLi is a risk at the best of times. Some games like it other's don't. That card isn't a great performer imo. It's beaten by the HD3850pro in most games. So if you really want dual graphics cards then maybe crossfire HD3850's that way you can get an intel based motherboard to which are better all round. I would stick with one good card personally. A single 3850pro would suit most peoples needs.
You can't do SLi on the guad GT anyway if thats the board you are thinking of getting.

Do you honestly care about 5..10 seconds booting time? Can you stand some rediculous hard drive noise. If the answer is yes to both of those get the raptor lol
If you really want to waste money on expensive hard drives get an SSD

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

Ok thanks lol, but is the GTS worth 100 smackers more? Since I can get the GT for about £119 and the GTS for about £213

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

If you can get the 512MB GT as £119 then go for it.

In fact at £160 or less the GT is deffiantly worth going for over the GTS unless you are gaming at 1920 x 1200.

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

Same as above then. Cheap 8800GT 512mb (say £150 or less) or HD3870 (about £130).

Or the 512mb HD3850pro which is a great overclocker (up to HD3870 levels).

All of these will be pretty flawless at 1680 x 1050. The GT will be best but at that extra cost.

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

Yeah it's fine but the HB3850pro is better and cheaper. Just can't recommend the 256mb GT..
