    Psu

A friend of mine is gettin a new case, motherboard, cooler and PSU so that he can get a bit of overclocking done.

He was previously running a 945 chipset, a pretty dodgy looking PSU and the case replacement is just to have something that looks a bit nicer, has better cooling and space for upgrade.

The rest of his current spec is
    E6400
    2GB Corsair DDR2 800Mhz
    640MB 8800GTS
    3 Sata Hard Drives
    2 DVD Drives
    M-Audio Delta 1010 soundcard
    PCI-Ethernet adaptor
He usually runs quite a few USB devices aswell ei external HDD, Midi keyboard, Game controller

    And we decided on
    Asus P5K, iP35
    Antec P182
    520W Corsair HX
    Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme

His heart it set on that case so no changes will be made there however any suggestions on the PSU or Mobo? Also does the HS come with clips or do you have to buy them seperately?

May I refer you to the XS tiered psu list:
Official XS Tiered PSU Manufacturer Brand Listing Phase III - XtremeSystems Forums
For these parts I'd recommmend at least a 500w psu. I'd feel safer with something like 600w. Corsair is a very well regarded brand and the HX or TX serieses :s should be fine. Unfortunately you mught be paying upwards of £75 for one.

The HX520watt corsair will be more then enough for that spec.

    Re: Psu

A VX450w would power it fine. however it does lack the modular connectors.

The Thermalright ultra120 extreme does come with clips, but not a fan, so you'll want to add one to the list.
Scythe S-Flex are good (although I'd not get the 800rpm version as the air flow is a bit pants)
A friend of mine recently built a pc with a p182 (the mirriored one) and thermalright ultra120 etereme, she used one of the Sharkoon golfball 2000rpm and she's very happy with it.

One quick note, it will look very tall in the p182 case but you can get the side pannel on, Just.
There's about 1mm clearence between the top of the cooler and the side pannel, I kid you not.

    Re: Psu

I knew the PSU would power it fine however im wonding if it will buckle under the pressure of overclocking. I tried to peesuade him to bump the PSU up to the 620 but he didnt want to spend more than £60 :/

We got all kinds of fans kicking about so i think some experimentation will be going on.

    Re: Psu

be careful about what fan you pick for you Thermalright. I just fitted one and some fans have will not be compatable.

The inside of the fan's screw holes must be accessible

Some fans use a tube between the front and back of the fan and close off access to the screw holes

I had to use a hacksaw and some pliers to get my UV thermaltake fan on to a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme. I get very good temps with my Q6600 and that cooler.

    Re: Psu

The Thermalright Ultima 90 (still uses a 120mm fan) is a good choice for a Heat sink smaller than the Ultra 120 Extreme but not a huge performance drop. They come with all the mounting hardware you need including fan clips and the Ultima 90's fan clips are such that any fan will fit not just those with open fittings.

The PSU will be fine for Overclocking I have one and it doesn't struggle in the slightest with my CPU at 2.8GHz running 24/7.

As for main board most people would probably say the Abit IP-35 is better than the Asus but it tends to be just a support issue rather than features.

This would also be a good choice of PSU IMO: Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

To check your power requirements, check out this new PSU calculator:

    Hope that helps

Cheers ciber but he wants it to be modular. I dont really trust those calulators, they suggested my opteron system requires a 530w psu lol

Well yes a good 530w PSU should be more than enough for your system.

    Re: Psu

I run the Corsair 520W HX with a very similar set up to that. It is a monster of a power supply and will serve you well. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

It certainly still holds its ground well when overclocking too - I've had my E6750 up to 3.6GHz without too much trouble, at which point I suspect the motherboard is not letting me push harder.

The VX450 would power that happily though the HX520 isn't much more and modular.
