    500gb hard drive suggestions?

I'm looking for a 500gb hard drive to back up everything from my samsung one. the samsung one is pretty noisy tbh, not to bad for normal use but it starts grinding when i start acessing the files on it.

So, a 500gb, sata II, quiet hard drive? Any suggestions?

    Re: 500gb hard drive suggestions?

i was suprised when you said a Samsung was noisy actually...glad it's sorted.

If you do need a new drive, you want a Western Digital SE16 AAKS 500gig.

Thats the one iv got & no problems here, use it as a tank HDD so its just solid films & music. Noise isnt really an issue, you hear it loading up & searching etc but nothing id class as intrusive.

The AAKS is great in the P182. I can't hear the thing at all.

Why so mate? Would a Seagate with the 32MB cache not be better?

    Size isn't everything

I don't know why but I don't really like seagate.

Not much use if it fails - the value of the data is generally far higher than the value of the drive - and the warranty doesn't cover that! (FWIW - I find the Samsung reliable and very quiet)

I have dealt with seagate a couple of times though, and they have been useless.. It would take all of the 5 years to get an issue sorted.

Agreed, but they must be far more confident in the reliability of their drives to offer such a long warranty period.

Iv always been a fan of samsung, had one of their screens go faulty on me few monthd ago & between reporting it and getting a new one delivered took 7 days. Couldnt believe how quick & easy it was with them.

    +1 vote for anything samsung

you'd think so, huh? I'm sure they;re very proud, and I for one have NOT had one fail, having used many.

BUT,,,,we conducted a poll recently on the drives you'd LEAST trust, and Maxtor and Seagate came low.

Samsung won, followed by WD. By a long way.

    Re: 500gb hard drive suggestions?

Perhaps that's correct, I've received a number of new drives from Seagate that all had many errors, so I suspect that they probably have a looser definition of what constitutes an acceptable drive than other people. If I had a choice between two products though with one having 3 year warranty and one having 5 year then I'd still much rather buy the one with 5 year, it just seems common sense to me. And no offence, I respect your website, but I wouldn't trust the results of any poll without looking at the detail of how it was conducted, the parameters of the questions, etc. As a psychologist I conduct research on a regular basis, and know how hard it is to gather data that can be relied on to make judgements. But we're getting a long way from my original question here, I just wanted to know why you'd recommend the WD as you gave no explanation..... reliability? Noise level? Performance?

    Re: 500gb hard drive suggestions?

    The western Digital AAKS is,

The quietest Hard drive I have used, as i said, Silent in the P182.

On par with any other hard drive (no noticable difference anyway)

I hav donee builds with 5 WD in the last year or so and had so many over the last 10 years I can't really remember. They are all still going

Never had a single problem with one of them.

Had maxtors go, seatgate's go, fujutsu.. the list goes on.
