Question What's the best computer magazine to subscribe to?

I wasn't quite sure where to post this; I didn't want to post in lifestyle because I want a computer mag...

My mum offered to buy me a mag subscription for christmas, but didn't know which one to get me, and neither do I! - it's been months or possibly years since the last computer mag I bought, but I need some interesting reading for the bathroom

I keep up to date mainly on here! - but can anyone recommend a mag that is more aimed at techs than the general public?

Re: What's the best computer magazine to subscribe to?

had you of asked me this last year i would have said PCFormat but to be honest it has went down hill big time since the editer tooko over and basically what used to be a mainly hardware mag has now turned into a crap gaming mag with a small amount of hardware reviews.

So for this reason i will tel you what i am telling everyone else and that is to get a subscription to Custom PC. By far the best one out there in my opinion. I used to get this and pcformat but now its only this. Have been getting it for 2years and i love it.

    Micromart is my favourite.

Custom PC is very expensive for very little info. Just all advertisements.

Problem with all the mags is that they are so basic. Even the ones like the 2 mentioned above.

There is no true enthusiast mag that doesnt treat you like an idiot.

I get PC Hardware Review at Computer Power User Magazine: How To Build Your Own Computer, Overclocking Guide from the US, it's about as in-depth & geeky as you want. I also read PC Plus & Pro, shopper & Micromart.

PC Pro is def good. That labs stuff is very useful if you're purchasing kit - but you can find it all on the website.

Re: What's the best computer magazine to subscribe to?

Depends whether you want a general computer mag or a specialist one. Do you do any Photoshop, 3D modelling, audio recording etc because they could be worth a punt.

By the time the magazines have made it onto the shelves, most of the news stuff is out of date and you're left with "How to Defrag Your HDD in 10 Easy Steps" every 6 months

Re: What's the best computer magazine to subscribe to?

PCPro used to be excellent, can't comment on it these days as I haven't picked up a copy for years.

Is John Honeyball still there? The columns at the end were always the best big of the magazine.

Re: What's the best computer magazine to subscribe to?

To add to my requirements following some of the recommendations, I have to say I have no interest in overclocking - but getting a mag from the USA sounds like it could be worth while...

I've been saying this for the last 6 months, but haven't quite got it started yet but; I'm setting up self-employed doing home PC repairs/services - so a general mag is of more interest to me, as customers will want me to have a wide knowledge and will want to ask my oppinion on everything computers.

I'm a PC Pro subscriber, and I find it consistently the best; Honeyball is still there, as is Davey Winder, Steve Cassidy et al, and the coverage is generally very good. I particularly like the RWC and Enterprise sections.

Re: What's the best computer magazine to subscribe to?

Yeah, PcPro here .. I've subscribed to it for years, best of the bunch.
They could expand the articles that we all like into a mag of its own,
and ditch the latest "hard disk supertest" .. call it "PC Guru" or something

I've had a sub to CustomPC for a year or two, but might drop that one, as its a bit short of pages, and too much about overclocking and overpriced gear for me ...

This is getting boring - PCPro for me to, have been buying fairly regularly and have just been given a sub for Christmas.

Maybe we should have a poll??

Re: What's the best computer magazine to subscribe to?

I like Micromart for a few reasons,

Its weekly so gives me something to read that I am interested in, every week.
Its a general PC mag about hardware and software with a smidgen of games.
They listen to their readers and try to improve things, you can suggest things you
would like to see and they are even happy to publish things you send in.

No magazine is really going to teach me stuff, if it does its going to be about things
I am not really that interested in, in the first place.

Monthly magazines are just too far apart I would just end up buying another magazine and then would end up reading stuff I have already read in the other one.

Re: What's the best computer magazine to subscribe to?

looks like PC pro is going to be the one from what you guys have said... I've read a few of them myself in the past.... I might go out and buy a copy of micromart to see what readable content it has - I always thought it was just a paper full of only classifieds - the name does give that impression.
