8800gt struggles with Quake 4
That can't be right. My BFG 8800gt 512 plays FEAR frame rate rest with min frame rate of 47, and yet Quake 4 at 1280 x 1024 is really jerky. WTF is that all about?
Hmmm... anyone else tried it? Perhaps I need to patch Q4. Not sure if I have the most up to date game patch. Sure I have the most up to date 8800gt drivers.
Also, while I've got your attention, I find that trees (AOE3, Dawn Of War, Battle For Middle Earth 2) seem to have REAL graphic problems in that the shadows flicker. No lag, no slowdown, nothing like that, just the shadows are pixelly and flicker around.
Any help much appreciated.
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
I'll download a demo of Q4 and try it out. Might be the engine? I can't play MB2 anymore because it's just too laggy as in fps lag.
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
Interesting. Let me know how you get on. Cheers.
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
Shouldnt do.
My old 9800XT used to walk through that and the 8800GTS 320mb also.

seemed smooth to me, 1280 x 1024 and x16 AA on. Latest drivers too I think.
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
Hmmmm... OK, I'll have to check it again. Perhaps there was something weird going on. Like, I'd set AA to 15,000 again.
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
Make sure its set to use a multi core CPU. My 8800GTS 320 running on a Q6600 was jerky till I applied the latest patch at the time and ticked the multi core box :)
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
That multi core patch killed mine..... frame rates increased but graphics went very, very dark to the point you could hardly see anything. Turned it off and Bingo! All was fine again!?!
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
demo had no multicore option but it was okay. did need v-sync on as i noticed the shearing quite a lot.
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
Just loaded the game up in 1680 x 1050, x4AA, ultra-high settings, multi-core on; plays just fine here and that's on Vista x64.
After firing up skirmishes in both AOE3 and DoW (BfMe2 using the latest patch isn't compatible with the OS so I can't test that :(), I can't see any flickering shadows. I'm using the 169.25 version drivers and they've been pretty good so far.
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
OK, it's me then. Dammit.
Where's this tickbox for multi core?
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
After you get the latest patch it's in the options somewhere
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
Silly shooty. Disable Vsync and off we go...

+1 achievement point: A lesson well learned - at least you'll know for next time :)
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
Funny thing is, I don't recall enabling it. I don't use it for any other games.
Ah, c'est la vie.

Should vsync be disabled in most games? Why is it required?
Re: 8800gt struggles with Quake 4
I enable it most of the time, it caps your FPS to match the refresh rate of your display and so in theory achieves maximum 'smoothness' while eliminating image tearing.
