Server to CAD workstation conversion???
Now I have one of these IBM - System x - IBM eServer x226 : Features & benefits - India kicking around & I want to use it as an additional CAD workstation by giving it a graphics card. It has a PCI-E x16 slot so is there any reason why it wouldn't work?
Re: Server to CAD workstation conversion???
Don't see why not. I don't know what specification card you intend using, but you could by a cheap one (about £30) to test the concept - and if it works and the low spec card doesn't meet the requirement, you could upgrade later. However for CAD you probably just need high resolution, rather than a top end card that you would use for gaming or other high frame rate applications.
Re: Server to CAD workstation conversion???
I'm not sure if it is still the case , but the CAD specific cards ( such as the FireGL or NVidia Quadro ones ) would probably be ideal.
if its any help - heres the list of cerified cards for Autodesk Inventor ( couldn't find the autocad one )

Re: Server to CAD workstation conversion???
I have a Quadro Pro FX1500 to go in it somewhere at home from when I was going to buy myself Inventor & go self employed. However my new boss is indecisive about what system to use, Inventor, Pro Engineer or Solid Works. Luckily I am sh*t-hot good in all of them and CATIA n'all. :) Why I is the manager innit
Just got myself a couple of these Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK to play with too. Cheap as chips & do the job nicely.
