    Talking Another Newbie System Build

Some of you may know me/grown sick of me (Constant newb question in one thread to StaffsMike)

Well anyway after much hassling around I have decided I'm definitely going to ubild myself a new rig (first one ever building myself!) and have put some components together.

There is 1 component which will probably change, that is the CPU as I am willing to wait till the end of January to build myself the new comp and the new 45nm Quads will be coming out.

Anyway without further ado here is everything I'm planning on buying (Already have Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse)

Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme 7.1 Audio PCI-E Soundcard OEM

    GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2
    GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)
    £30.54

    GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2
    GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)

    74 Gb Western Digital WD740ADFD Raptor, SATA150, 10000 rpm, 16MB Cache, 5.2 ms
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
    £88.00

    320 Gb Seagate ST3320620AS Barracuda 7200.10, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.5 ms, NCQ
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
    £54.39

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64Bit 1Pk OEM (DVD)
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
    £63.91

    Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 G0 SLACR
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
    £165.66

Which RAM should I go for, they are roughly around the same price, but one is Corsair and one is Geil. I may plan on OC'ing but not to begin with.

All in all it comes to a total cost of: £945.12 (Using the more expensive ram) incl VAT and Delivery

I'm going to be mainly using the rig for Gamin with such games as Crysis, FFOW, BF2142 and more to come

    All loks good.
    Stick with the Geil
    or
in my mind this is FAR better value and an amazing price: OCZ 4GB Kit (2x2048) NVIDIA SLI - Ready Edition DDR2 PC2 6400 800MHz Dual Channel EPP 5-4-4-15 Nvidia XTC Heatspreader - OCZ2N800SR4GK - www.microdirect.co.uk Also gives you room for upgrade with that board which the GEIL wont.

Glad you went GTS rather than GT aswell fella

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

RAM - my view has been that I will never go to 8Gb RAM with DDR2 so paying extra for 2x2Gb has no point, but with the differential now so low, I don't think it matters which you get as long as it's a good brand with a good warranty.

HDDs I don't think are a good choice. I'd get the 7200.11 32Mb cache Seagate 500Gb, and have more real estate for half the price. Or even get two and RAID them. Sure the Raptor has fast seek times, but it's lastgen hardware and noisy to boot.

You don't mention an optical drive. The Samung SH203 is tops.

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

Well the 2x2GB is basically the same price so I will probably go for them....

With HDD's I wanted somethiong really fast just for games and then something else for everything else...

Would appreciate any other people opinions on this.....

Thanks to everyone so far though....

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

I'm not sure I would bother with the QuadGT. Seems a bit over priced and you hear a few too many horror stories about it.

A P35 based board might be a good bet. Abit IP-35pro perhaps.

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

If you oc (which i sincerely hope you do) use only TWO sticks of ram in dual channel mode.

If i were you, i'd get a more powerful psu too, the corsair TX 750w is quite reasonably priced, as is the Thermaltake 750w.

If you have a silly amount of money for the DDR3 ram that it'll use!

aBit IP-35 Pro is a lovely board for the money, or it's lesser brothers if you don't need the extra bells and whistles.

    Re: Another Newbie System Build

i'm a teenager too, but I don't have unlimited money...

my latest rig (see sig) cost approx. £600, and i saved for about 13 months for it.

The mobo might change soon though, as TWO gigabyte DS3Rs have been DOA for me, so atm the bloody thing isn't working, and i'm anxious to start ocing

Not in any recent Intel chipset boards. Can't say I've noticed any problems OC'ing in my IP35 Pro either. Anyway last boards I heard that had a problem with 4 x 1Gb also had a problem with 2Gb sticks.
