samsung may be slightly smaller, doubt there is much in it.

Im really tempted by a vostro, firend has a 1500 and thought it was bulky, are the 1400 that much smaller?

if you want a thinner cheap dell then the 1525 (and 1425 if we actually got them) are a good option.

My GF just bought the Vostro 1500 with 2.00Ghz, 3GB RAM, 160GB HDD and 8600 GT GFX and I must say for a budget laptop it's incredibly well built and has some great features
