Geforce 9 series - price drop for 8 series?
Im looking at getting a 8800GT to run a 24" screen im getting but im wondering if id be better of waiting for the release of the Geforce 9 series before i buy the graphics card.
How much of a price drop will their be for the Geforece 8 cards when the 9 series comes out? Would i be better off waiting or will the drop in prices be too small to make waiting worthwhile?
cheers guys.

price drops on next-gen releases are funny things. often, the older cards simply disappear from the market
Re: Geforce 9 series - price drop for 8 series?
Occasionally you get lucky and find a shop that wants to sell off it's stock cheap, eBuyer selling the x1950XT for £95 in August was a prime example. More often than not though retailers still list the old cards at high prices, take the x800XT for example:
x800xt - Google Product Search
Lowest price Google can find is £170, highest being £406!

I wish 'funny' was the word, more like irritating. I've been trying to source a cheap 2900XT to give crossfire a bash, the shops that sell them still have them at 200+ which is a joke.
So yeah, most likely they'll fade away into nothingness and the select few places that still sell them won't bother reducing prices hoping that people will still buy them.

if you buy wholesale stock at price X, you want to sell at >X - otherwise, you're making a loss
the options are
a) keep stock levels very low, so you rarely buy and sell at disparate prices (means you're often out of stock, and when a card becomes obsolete, you'll never see it in stock again
b) buy at one price, and stick to your guns with selling price, i.e. the pc world approach. when i worked at pc world, they were selling ancient kyro 2 cards they'd massively overstocked on at the same price as a gf4ti. eventually, someone MIGHT bite, if they're ill-informed
c) buy at one price, sell at a loss when things change
which option seems best to you, if you ran a store?
Re: Geforce 9 series - price drop for 8 series?
Ya, thats obvious, stores dont want to sell at a loss, but then Ive seen stores having "stores" of obsolete products, no one buys, if they set the price a bit low, someone just might get them, so isnt it better to recover some share, rather than wait and hope for something that is next to impossible ( people buying obsolete products for full price )

Ebuyer have HD2900Pro 512mb cards for £95 delivered although they are the 256bit memory ones:

Best way is to buy at X
Sell at Z which is greater than X
Reduce to Y which is greater than X
Reduce again and so on. Eventually sell for less than X to clear the stock.
I thought this was the way all shops did business? You maximise revenue depending on people's ability and willingness to pay, the product and it's nature (high value, low value, high demand, low demand, niche product). So GFX cards are relatively niche (not going to be selling thousands per day) and of high value, so you may order in lower numbers. If you've done your numbers right you'll make a much greater profit on the early sales than the loss made on the late ones. Also since it's an iterative process, after a few years in the industry you'll get to 'know' the demand and so orders should be fairly good with little to no waste.

It's all about how it looks on paper. If you sell a card at a loss then it will reduce the amount of profit you've made that month (because you'll have made negative profit on that card), if you keep it in stock you don't loose any profit and will therefore have made more money.
It defies the laws of logic, but thats how it works. Anyway, theres always some idiot that buys something ancient off the basis of a 5 year old review

I'm starting to wish I had bid more on that and sold the other one, probably would have made a tidy profit.
