    Which Shuttle ??

New to SFF and this forum, I'm in total confusion.....Need Help from the experts !!

I'm on the verge of my 1st SFF and decided it will be a shuttle. Problem is which one. Don't really do much gaming and it will be for general use and media centre to sit next to the TV. Don't really do O/C....

    SN85G4
Pros: Future proof (or is it), peformance, AMD
Cons: Expensive, Noise, Need graphics (don't have one !!)

    Or

    ST61G4
    Pros: Quiet, On board Graphics
Cons: not so future proof and performace

Anyone out there got any tips ?

Oh, has anyone out there tried running Solaris x86 on these systems ??

    Thanks in advance .....

Dont really have an answer to your query but I always think that, when people say " dont do much gaming" or "I only want to play the occasional game" its like saying.......I'm looking for a car thats small and simple....cheap to run etc that will occasionally go 200 miles per hour and sometimes have a 0-60 of 4 seconds.

If you really do want a simple machine then some of the much cheaper Shuttles will do you very nicely......an SN45G with a Ti4200 will romp through most anything.

Aye if you want a decent all round system an sn41 or sn45 will do nicely, unless you love gaming or encoding big movies you won't really feel the benifit of an Athlon 64 or 800fsb P4

    Joe,

I see your point, then again you would spend that little bit more for car that with reliability and comfort and doesn't sound like a tank even though it doesn't do 0-60 in 4 seconds. Is there a car out there thats cheap to run these days ??

I have looked at the SN45, there seems to be a lot of issues with the v2 boards.

There isn't a 'Massive' difference in terms of price for the SN41 and SN85G4 in terms of just the barebone itself and the extra expense would probably be worth it, if its makes it that little bit more future proof.

But still, thanks for your comments.

The main reason I've decided against the SN85G4 is because the 754pin is going out in Q2 this year replaced by socket 939 & the dual channel A64's.

Nope. The point about computers is that every 3 months a new major event will happen. Whenever you buy, you buy knowing that something better will come in very soon. So just buy what you want when you want.

In terms of the 939 CPU, it will offer DC-DDR support, that is currently unavailable for 754 chips. But with all the mixed reports over the actual value of DC DDR, I would say forget it and buy into the 754. Remember that a 939 CPU will be very pricy when it hits the streets. You'd be better off just getting a 754 now as they already represent excellent value.
