since when did computer cases go upside down?
i've not been paying attention to developments in the world of computers lately , but now with the need to repair my computer i guess i have to pick it up again :juggle:
anyway, my idea of a computer chassis is psu at the top, pci / agp / pci express slots at the bottom ... but now it seems that there are more and more ATX towers which have things upside down on the inside? such as the lian li a05a ... evidently this is a very obvious change that i've somehow missed, what im curious about is just how long have i missed it?
Re: since when did computer cases go upside down?
The first case with such a configuration that I bought was an Antec P180 about three years ago. The idea is to isolate the power supply and CPU into separate cooling zones. If the PSU isn't sucking in hot air from the CPU then it doesn't have to work so hard to keep cool and (hopefully) you get less noise produced.
Re: since when did computer cases go upside down?
No the p180 just is part of the new trend of pus at the bottom, the lian li a05a is totally upside down and back to front.
the motherboard is upside down and on the other side, the psu is at the bottom but the front of the case, the rear case fan sucks air in over the cpu and when you think about it it all makes a crazy kind of sense.
Hottest components at the bottom, so heat can rise away from them, cold air from outside the case being blown directly over the hot components.
And all bodged together so the majority of standard components work in it.
Re: since when did computer cases go upside down?
I think a lot of this was inspired by the (failed) BTX form factor. It has some good ideas like this, but the market really didn't need or want a completely new motherboard form factor.

Also Power Macs have some pretty cool and funky internal layouts. PC manufacturers have taken a lot from that and the server market to the desktop.

couldn't that get a bit messy? :heckle:
Re: since when did computer cases go upside down?
LianLi A05A
Pictures of the Lian Li A05A in case anyone is interested.
Re: since when did computer cases go upside down?
I've the Lian-Li V2000B+ which as you can see is inverted atx.
Re: since when did computer cases go upside down?
I have the same case and TBH, I hate the upside-down design :(
My computer needs to be on my right, which means the window is on the wrong side - bah

Stick some rubber pads to the top of the case and turn it over then.... ;)
Re: since when did computer cases go upside down?
One big problem with upside down and back to front cases is that if you have a nice motherboard like the P5K premium I have, then all the heat from the VRM and Northbridge gets pumped up to the Southbridge and fries it good and proper.
I used to think Lian Li cases were great a few years ago but they just seem a bit boring to me.
I much prefer my P180 which managed to be plain like a P180 and a fair bit quieter. It's just a pity it's not as light as a Lian Li case!

That'd make inserting CDs and such quite an acrobatic feat! :D

You could just mount the drive upside down ;)

That's such a silly idea, flipping the case over to insert the CD is a much better idea.

Slot loading CD/DVD its the only solution ;)
Re: since when did computer cases go upside down?
Getting an inverted ATX layout case is sometimes useful, for example at home I share a desk with my other half and thus my PC is on the left of the desk. By getting a Lian Li PC-A05, the window is on the correct side for me and if there's a temperature problem, tbh I think it's more down to the lack of airflow right by the edge of the case.

Or just mounting your CD drive upside down so it's the right side up......
Re: since when did computer cases go upside down?
Maybe I should have qualified that with sarcasm tags!

It was mainly constructed to assist in reducing the temps in Preshott PCs - when Intel designed the Core architecture with its thermal efficiency I guess they stopped pushing it as the new form factor...
I think only Lian Li and OEMs like Dell actually built BTX cases - it wont be missed...
ps3ud0
