Vostro's are pretty much as cheap as it gets (while retaining quality)

What are the requirements? Does it have to be 14.1" or can it be less/more?

Can be less/more, it's not a major concern.

I'm just looking for a really good bang for buck laptop to do a bit of everything (programming, work, longish battery life and occasional gaming) and think I've found it in this model but it's always better to ask before you buy

I would say for the money you won't do much better.

The Vostro 1500 could be be had with 8600GT and 3GB of RAM for under £600 but it depends how important that occasional gaming is.

The 8400GS is pretty good for most games I find (i use an xps m1330)
I can play call of duty 4 at 1280 x 800 really quite nicely.

Re: Can this laptop be beaten for less than £500?

I could always upgrade to 3/4GB for buttons in a years time though, I doubt a small performance increase from the 8600 would be worth £150 more?

It is a sizeable leap in performance to be fair but perhaps not worth £150 if the gaming is occasional.

Well one is for occasional gaming, the other is just a badge. Put it that way. If you're gaming, don't bother with the 8400M and just save some more until you can afford the 8600M.

That's a bit strong. I can play every game i've tried on my 8400gs so far.

The 8600 just does it with higher detail.

Re: Can this laptop be beaten for less than £500?

I can afford it but I'm not convinced £150 is in any way worth the extra.

I'm happy playing games without AA/AF.

As a gaming laptop it is worth the extra.

But for battery life and occasional gaming it's probably not.

Re: Can this laptop be beaten for less than £500?

You could probably get another drop in the price if you get a firm quote through an account manager.

I spec'ed up a PC online and it came to £565 all in.
Went to my account manager with this quote. Got the PC through him for £484 all in!

Plus.... Dell's end of financial year in at the end of January. So they are keen to get as many boxes out the door as possible - so there is still the haggle factor when you call them to order too.

Re: Can this laptop be beaten for less than £500?

That's a great spec you posted, I've been looking at one for £500 and that seems to be the perfect laptop. 2GHz processor, 2GB of ram, decent graphics card for £468. That's excluding postage which also has to have VAT added (not sure how much postage is). I'm seriously thinking of buying that. 14" isn't too small, is it?

Re: Can this laptop be beaten for less than £500?

I quite like the samsung laptops but spec for spec the dell has it pipped.

    2.0GHz with more cache
    and Extra 1GB of RAM
Dedicated Graphics Vs Integrated (the dell can be integrated if you choose it to be)
    Larger hard disk
    More screen options
    Better warranty options

The Samsung is smaller though? I think the Vostros are a bit plasticy? and Dell charge for delivery at ridiculous rates.
