UT3 on 320mb 8800gts @ 1920X1200

Runs JUST AS GOOD as on 1280X1024. So why the eck do most people on any forum insist you need a 640MB version or a GTX or a new GT.????

I just got my Dell 2047WFP Rev A04 from ebay, thought i wouldnt be able to play unreal no more. But im getting between 35-60FPS, runs smooth and pretty much the same as on 1280X1024, had to change the mouse sensitivity settings and thats it.

Also

Its a massive monitor, starts to hurt my eyes using it for too long, any thing i could do to stop this? Im sitting almost 2ft away btw.

Re: UT3 on 320mb 8800gts @ 1920X1200

I think it's because on crysis where there is a lot of texturing / layering / effects on screen even on smaller resolutions it fills up 320mb and causes a drop in framerates over the 640mb version.

I've got a 320mb version and not noticed any issues except company of heroes with AA on in DX10. But I'm convinced DX10 is broken anyway, I turn it off in all my games where possible. DX9 looks better for the same performance and the performance jump is just massive. Whether this is because devs are used to DX9 and getting good performance out of it or whether it's because DX10 shaders are coded awfully, who knows.

UT3 isn't *that* graphically demanding though.

UT3 is just one game. It is super optimised for speed. Most games aren't like that. They churn through 320mb in no time, especially if you use higher resolutions. I've got an 8800GTX and even that struggles with several games.

Re: UT3 on 320mb 8800gts @ 1920X1200

UT3 is pretty CPU limited with many newer cards, and it doesn't need all that much texture memory.

There are a few games where the difference between 320 and 640 is very noticeable.

no current card can play Crysis maxed out at 1920x1200 but UT3 does not need all that much to drive it.

Re: UT3 on 320mb 8800gts @ 1920X1200

Technology moves on and people will always want something better than the last generation. I've just ordered a Q6600 and a 512Mb GTS to go with it. Why?

a) Because I can
b) I have a 30" monitor (2560x1600 btw) that needs plenty of graphics power behind it.

I've been struggling along with a 7600GS for the last 9 months so I'm definitely looking forward to the upgrade. It really depends whether you actually need the more powerful graphics cards, some people over specify their machines for the sake of it. I wasn't playing any games at all 12 months ago which is why I have a 7600GS, I didn't need anything more. But since TF2 came out, I've been getting back into it a little bit so now need some more power to drive my monitor at native (or as close as possible) resolution.

If your eyes are hurting using your new monitor, try turning down the brightness. It can take a few days to get used to a new monitor if it is significantly brighther than your old one. Remember, you don't need it turned up to maximum brightness just because your old one needed it 2 feet viewing distance should be okay as that's the distance I sit from my 30" and I don't have any problems as far as I can tell.

I am not sure where you are getting the 'most people' from. The impression I had was, at least from reviews I've seen, was that the 320MB is does perform on par with the 640MB version most of the time. At the time of it's release (after the 640MB was released), it definitely was better bang for buck. I was always of the opinion that many games with settings where 320MB would struggle probably will too with the 640MB version. In that sense, I think that the 640MB version make about as much sense as the 1GB GT under most circumstances. But there are exceptions, and some people who went 640MB version after the 320MB's release might've done for those reasons (plus, the price gap did narrow as I recall).

If someone is happy with what they have, be it a 8800 GTS (320/640MB), a Radeon 9700 or an S3 Virge, I don't think anyone would suggest them to upgrade (for a start they probably wouldn't ask for suggestions). It's not like people are not recommending slower cards when it's appropriate (as far as I know, the 320MB GTS still has a performance edge over the HD3850 and is in fact competitive with the 3870). But yes, there are games were the 320MB GTS might struggle, and if not UT3 then something else.

And look at the price of the 320MB GTS now. For are start those cards are disappearing from stores, and while there might be bargains to be had, but they are not obvious to find. In fact, I've seen more than a few store pricing them at £180. Even the prices on Ebay are comparable to a faster 256MB GT. If anyone is to upgrade from an older card today, it is hard to justify it unless you can find one new with full warranty at ~£110.

Re: UT3 on 320mb 8800gts @ 1920X1200

S3 Virge Now that was a graphics card!

I'm pretty sure in benchmarks of a fair few games the 640mb proved better at high resolutions with lots of eye candy but they are at the end of the day, the same card. Therefore in some circumstances the 320mb if clocked higher will out perform the 640mb.

No one is recommending them now anyway.. they are dead and gone as far as anyone should be concerned. The HD3850pro is probably better and costs ~£100.

Re: UT3 on 320mb 8800gts @ 1920X1200

@staffsMike: I was actually wondering that - but from a performance perspective, the 640MB (and by association, the 320MB in probably more circumstances than not) is faster. Hence the £110 comment. There are some areas the 3850 is better at (temperature, HDMI audio etc.), but I find it hard to price some of those things (really depends on your values).

@Blitzen: If it's new and all, then the price is right for the item IMO. Still, the one I worry about when buying from another user, even boxed and new, is the warranty (receipt in another name/address etc.). I've never had to claim an item under warranty under those circumstances so I am not sure if it is straightforward or not. But everything being equal, I think I personally would pay just a little bit more from a store if possible (though I note that some GFX manufacturers have some kind of 'second buyer' warranty).

I had a 8800GTS 320 and when I got a 24" I definitely noted slowdown when compared to 1680x1050. This was particularly evident when faced with force fields separating the zero-G sections from normal gravity. Slowdown and stuttering a plenty. But on other maps it ran just fine and dandy...
