8800GT vs 8800GTS

Im looking at getting a new graphics card to power a 24" monitor im getting. Having had a look at ocUK(scan dont have the screen ins tock so getting it from ocUK) iv got a choice between a 8800GT and a ocUK value GTS, the linsk are below.

I want to keep the budget to £180, but which one would people advise?
Also, what does the ocUK value bit mean, does that mean im getting a sub standard card?

The GT is a better card than the older GTS cards. Take a look at some of the benchmarks .

It does not necessarily mean sub standard, it normally means you will be getting an unknown or a not very well known brand of gfx card, which can be a good or bad thing. It might be a wise idea to ring them and ask exactly which brand it is, so you can search about it on the net. Or alternatively post a question on their forums.

Ill give ocUK a call tomorrow and ask, the one year warrenty has me a bit hesitant though, do problems often come up with graphics cards reliability wise?

Compare them in any review from any reputable site (such as Bit-tech) and the results will follow the same trend.... For what it's worth the "old" GTS cards won't cut it against the new GT cards.

To immediately tell the difference between the old and new GTS cards look at the amount of RAM the card has. The new GTS cards have 512MB of RAM as apposed to the 320MB and 640MB found on the older ones, but you'd be paying more than GT for one of them iirc.

In some of those benches (crysis) the 640mb gts beats the 512GT.

Maybe the extra ram comes into play at high res (24"WS) which is what the OP was using.

Yup, out of the two you originally listed, it's got to be the GT. However, for an extra £20 you could get yourself a new GTS (G92) which might be the better choice if you want to play at 1920 x 1280.

I recently upgraded my machine (mobo, cpu, RAM & GFX) and had the choice of a new 8800GTS or an 8800GT. The price difference was £20 and as I have a 30" monitor, I wanted the best chance possible to play at high resolution with eye candy turned on. I'm VERY glad I chose the GTS because I can play TF2 & UT3 at full resolution (2560x1600) with all the eye candy turned on without slow down.

I can whole heartedly recommend the new GTS over the old one or the GT.
I have put the BFG one in my machine a little while ago.

New GTS = 12978

Thats a huge leap and the BFG GTS 512mb is under £200 now aswell (and is the quickest clock for clock)

The GT is better than the older GTS so would be my preference, but if you can stretch your budget a bit further then the (G92) GTS is best.

GT is better than the older GTS but the newer GTS can be bought for around 190 and is a little bit better than the GT
I have a 512 GT and it is an awesome card especially for the price

Andehh, with a 24" monitor and a £180 budget, I would strongly recommend the extra £5 for the £185 512MB 8800GTS Innovision card Dorza has linked. If you're into gaming and eye candy, the 8800GT will begin to suffer at that resolution.

What happened to your £230 eVGA 8800GTS from last month? Or are you SLIing? Even a single 512MB 8800GTS seems a waste on a 22" monitor - sorry to hear you couldn't stretch to a decent 24".
