Dead simple really, it's a quirk of that motherboard (and in more general terms the chipset).

Just update the BIOS to a newer version and the problem should go away because it really does sound like the standard aBit P35 double boot problem (check their forums for more details on this). In the mean time, just be patient with the second boot, let it complete it each time it asks because it's a self-test facility.

    ------

The hanging during install is possibly down to the RAM voltage or the PSU quality as a whole. Vista and XP also do not like to install with 4GB RAM. Put 1GB in and install using that, then add the rest when the install process is complete.
Well I will check out the aBit forums for more info on that thanx

The issue though is I do let it continue to boot, but simply repeats the off on, off on indefinately.

How does one update bios without a FDD or doing it through windows?

The board should support a flash of the BIOS via USB memory stick. Best bet is to post in the aBit forums and hopefully either Sean, Gilgamesh or BUFF will pick it up

Re: Computer switches off and on after a few seconds

Possibly a silly question, as it is so basic - but easily forgotten; but have you fully reset the BIOS, and is the BIOS reset jumper in the correct position?
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

Yep have tried the multiple reset and switch on strategy as well to no avail

Re: Computer switches off and on after a few seconds

If you are unable to flash the BIOS to a higher level [or if that does not solve the issue] then return the motherboard ... I can feel your pain - getting nice shiny new pieces of kit and then having it act weird is a major nuisance. Return the ABIT and get a comparable ASUS model.
