I'm not one to start a new thread when there are already ones going on about the same thing, but it seems within the last 5 pages there isn't 1 thread about which hdd to buy! Amazing!
Anyway simply put, quietest 400gb hdd?
Cheers.
As far as i know, Samsungs are still the quietest.

Does it specifically have to be 400Gb? as the current quiet crown for 3.5" drives is going to the Western Digital Caviar GP (Green Power) drives which come in minimum of 500Gb, probably closly followed by the Samsung SpinPoint T166 which will offer better performance but will be louder.
Check out review of the WD drive at Silentpcreview.com - WD GP review
I was actually wondering what this thread was about.
According to Storagereview, the T166 and GP are as quiet as each other on idle. I would kind of expect the GP to be quieter on seek given that it spins at lower speed.
User comment I've read suggests that the Samsung F1 is as quiet as the T166 whilst being faster, but I've not really seen an in depth review of the drive. The WD AAKS should follow noise wise.
I wondered that too, but it is measured at a tiny distance from the drive if I remeber, 3mm or something. Another thing to note with the Storage Review test is that they compare a 500Gb T166 with a 1Tb GP which imo seems a bit of an unfair comparison as the Samsung has 3 platters (of 166Gb each) and the GP has 4 (of 250Gb each, which as per techreport.com "Higher density platters can improve performance by allowing the drive head to access more data over shorter physical distances.") and is twice the capacity (and probably the cost). If they had compared the 500Gb GP with only 2 platters and a closer price match I'd say that it should be quieter than the samsung. But not found a comparative review of both the 500Gb drives yet.
I'd agree F1should be faster, but don't they only come in 750Gb and 1Tb?User comment I've read suggests that the Samsung F1 is as quiet as the T166 whilst being faster, but I've not really seen an in depth review of the drive. The WD AAKS should follow noise wise.
At the moment, the F1 can seemingly only be found in 750GB and 1TB flavour in store, but according to Samsung's product line up, the 500GB/640GB are also due.
Samsungs are really quiet, plus they are pretty fast... the 500gb has a 16mb cache
