Re: Q6600 vs E8400 for gaming
People!! think well and make a good choice for today. The topic is for the games. You all agree that e8400 is better than q6600, especially that everyone can overclock e8400 up to 4 ghz (not with stock cooler). When all apps and games will use 4 cores and up,2 cores will not be anymore produced and you will not be certainty buy q6600.
So q6600 do not match with these discussion. I`m nobody from europe and ordering parts from america. And for sure i will go for the best of the moment for the price:
e8400, tuniq cooler, gigabyte ep35-ds3p, g.skill ddr2 800 mhz (black cover),8800gts 512. for 4 years i will try to change only my cpu to q9*** and add ram.till than every thing can change.EVERYTHING IS RELATIVE.(BUT HIS TEORY??).CHEARS
Re: Q6600 vs E8400 for gaming
I was actually thinking of getting the following, mainly for gaming and especially Age of Conan.
Q6600 - Most likely overclocking it to 3,2MHz
XFX 8800GT
P5K PRO
4GB DDR2 800
Will this all run smooth? At everything max'd out at 1600x1200 I mean. Coz when I read the things you guys have been saying about the cpu's and stuff. I would like a future build pc, if you get my point. Isnt a Quad Core better than a duel core when you would like to run winamp in your background while your just playing your game? And isnt a Quad core more efficient if you like to enjoy your processor still in 2/3 years?
Thanks in advance
Re: Q6600 vs E8400 for gaming
I'm sure that system would manage most games at 1600 x 1200 nicely.
Yes quads are far better for multi tasking. You can have quite CPU intesive apps running the back on 2 cores and 2 cores for gaming, it's very handy :)
Re: Q6600 vs E8400 for gaming
afaik from a bit of game programming i messed with, 3d games sort of run in continuous loops, therefore cpu usage will be 100% , therefore its not a good indicator for a bottleneck. Can't compare games to word
As someone rightly said the best test is to see how the fps changes with resolution/detail changes, if as u reduce quality, the fps does not increase, then there is a CPU bottleneck.
not 100% on this info so correct me if i'm wrong
Re: Q6600 vs E8400 for gaming
I am just about to replace a Q6600 with the E8400. On my asus p5b-e my old E6550 was a lot faster than the Q6600.
I am now on my second Q6600 and on my board with ocz platinum ram is refuses to oc past 3ghz. My old E6550 was up to 3.4 without breaking a sweat. Ive now spent far to many hors tring to get the Q6600 up to speed so am going to go back to dual core. Should be cooler too....

Set things right and the temps with a Q6600 arent an issue.
Also, its nothing to with the the Q6600 with reference to your speeds. Its the motherboard. Get a good motherboard and i can guarantee you will notice no difference during gaming and only a slight difference in benchmarking.

I agree. Its just the combo of chip and motherboard that I have. I want to keep my board going a bit longer and am lucky enough to be able to try an E8400 to see if it is better for my setup.
