Need help to find a laptop

Hey guys im currently looking into a notebook/laptop. I have about £1200-1300 to spend.

I would like it to be fast with 2gb ram and pref a 17inch screen and a half decent graphics card. I know i wont be playing crysis on it anytime soon but would like to be able to play games on it while im on a train etc. I have looked at rock direct and dell but not sure what to get Are my ambitions too high?

Anyone got any ideas?

Something like the vostro 1700 could be specced very highly in that budget.

Rock are a good place to get higher spec laptops but they are a bit pricey.

you can pretty much tick the highest box on everything with the vostro

If you want to prioritse gaming then this is an older model but you can get a 7950GTX within budget

fairly sure evesham went into administration but this is probably the cheapest way to get an 8700GT
can't seem to post the link for this one but it's on evesham.com and under notebooks select ultimate.


High spec on this on as well, it's the same as the vostro but silver with a custom lid colour

for rock this is quite nice on a budget

HD Dvd ROM but lower graphics power than the dell and no idea about the build quality. Rock have a forum that may be worth checking out.

Thanks very much Mike. Reason why im only spending £1200 is cause i have to build up a server to back up my HDD's after one of mine dying last month! Think you may have posted in that thread too.

I like the idea of having the 7950go in the laptop as i know its a good card.

Yeah even though it's an older model it's a great laptop. There should be some very cheap ones on ebay.

i have no experience with rock but the dell vostro 1700 mentioned by staffsmike should be pretty good (although it might be pretty heavy)...

The vostro when custumised to be on par with the rock ends up costing more and is slower as the processer only goes up to 2.33ghz (which they are charging £410 for on its own)

Now they are using the 8800GTX don't bother with the 7950 as the 8800 is about about twice as powerful

You could go a spec lower on the CPU to save a bit of money but I really would get the 8800GTX if you can.
