What do you se your main system for?

I have 4 PCs in my house, one running as a server , 2 media centers and the main system I use mainly for gaming and a bit of Sony Vegas video editing.

I also have a laptop that I use for work.

Totting up how much my "main" pc cost its worth just as much as the the others put together (minus the laptop). As I don't game a quater as much as I used to I find this totaly stupid and to be honest a bit of a waste, it sits there most of the time unused and only comes out to play for a couple of hours at the weekend. I would say my laptop (what I am using right now) get used for a good 10 hours a day for work and posting on this forum, the media PCs get used a few times a week, the media server is always doing somthing but the £2,000 gaming system collects dust.

So what uses do you have for you "main" PC?

Re: What do you se your main system for?

Originally my main PC "my system" did everything. I have a fair few old ones knocking about but mainly I have

3 year old Sony Vaio which was main until I got..

"My System" PC last christmas and now I have an ..

xps M1330 at uni with me (and the vaio)

The Desktop was for games and something to tinker with on my placement year when I was bored mainly.. a treat to myself as I hadn't had a new desktop for about 10 years.

Now.. as your does.. it collects dusts. I am attempting to sell it at the moment for too much money but thats the only way I will sell it

Re: What do you se your main system for?

I've been thinking the same about my system, 90% of the time im using it for browsing the web.

I keep getting the upgrade urge, but it would be a complete waste of money. My BE-2300, x1950 XTX and 2GB Ram are overkill already!

If i could rewind 6 months i'd probably get a £300 dell and pop a 7600GT in there...

Re: What do you se your main system for?

hard to define the 'main' one - but I suppose it is the one that hosts my web site and acts as an internal file server - and because it is on 24x7 its the one I use for general web browsing. Not ideal - really I ought to run it at run level 3 withough the X system running (just using up system resources) and SSH into for admin. But it works as is. Oh yes - it folds as well!

    see peterb has it right!

Your main pc actully does stuff!

One thing I can say is that my quad cant half render video!

I recorded 1080P video direct from a game while I was playing it and it didn't even notice, i then create a full HD video in Sony vegas and rendered it in no time.

23 seconds of video at full HD was over 650mb! so much that a USB external drive coudn't handle it so I had to use my RAID 0 array to capture the video from fraps.

Re: What do you se your main system for?

I use my main PC all day because I work from home. Gets used for Photoshop, Dreamweaver, mySQL and a fair bit of audio recording at the weekends with my band. I recently upgraded to a quad core because some of my audio projects were really eating up CPU cycles and Sonar 7 is optimised for Quads. It's great to see the 4 CPU meters bumbling up and down where it was maxed out before with my old AMD 4800+

I also have an EEE which surprisingly gets used a lot. I only bought it because I wanted a toy to play with over Xmas, but I use it all the time. It's actually right next to my bed should I feel the need to check my emails or watch a film before bed. Definitely my best purchase of last year

My main PC is used solely for playing games. We also have a couple of laptops in the house, from my and the missus's place of work.

Re: What do you se your main system for?

I used to have umpteen rigs all doing specific tasks but ditched the lot a few years back to make a fresh start; all due to a compulsive upgrade addiction I had to kick!

These days, I'm content with a single rig, for both work and play, that's updated "sensibly". I'm still after a portable though. Trouble is I need a Mac for dev testing but their laptops are overpriced for what they contain when compared to a Windows equivalent.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

Using toolsets to make mods for games, playing games. Both of which fit the specs perfectly because that was what I built it for

1 HP ML110 running as a server (SBS 2003 mainly file & print plus email server but also NOD32 Update server for client PCs)
3 PCs one for each daughter – homebuilds
1 PC for me (as My System), flight Sims, browsing, home accounts, email, general stuff. Flight Sims just can’t get enough processing & video power……
A bunch of HP laptops for wireless browsing and email – hardly ever get used now…..
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

Re: What do you se your main system for?

Nothing, just giving me a couple of hours of gaming, Ive got an old PIII for work, it surfs, mails, MS office, Spider solitaire? Gaming PC's are pretty much a "Waste" as every season has a couple of games worth playing, by the time the next season comes, your hardware is not top notch anymore ...In some ways Consoles are good, anyways lets not go there!

Re: What do you se your main system for?

My main system is used primarily for games, usually at least 2 hours a night (beats watching TV!). Yes, I could have gotten a games console for a lot less, but quite frankly, I must prefer a mouse + keyboard over a gamepad.

Not to mention you can easily look stuff up online when you're stuck on a PC!

Whilst on some level i agree with you. In comparison to a Dell laptop the specs are massively inferior, however, the build quality of Macbooks is uttely superb. Whenever i use a laptop i hate it, they all all really cheap plasticky crap and never look to have been engineered particualy well but when i got my macbook pro a few months ago i was so chuffed. Its amazin how much they fit into a 1" thick laptop and whilst you pay a massive premium for the mac label, i believe i got what i payed for

The computer i use the most is the one in my system. Do a lot of gaming, website, photoshop, flash, essays, presentations and i use it as a media centre. I use my macbook pro so i can do all those things at uni (i hate using pool computers and i can never read my notes after lectures) plus i prefer it for Video editing (final cut pro) and audio work (logic). I did have an old P4 rig which wasnt built until recently but i lent it to a mate as her laptop was apsolutely dreadful.

    get the 360 mate.

I have both a 360 and a 8800GT OC2 from BFG. The 360 has Assassins Creed, Halo3 and Forza, just for them 3 its worth it. Also with a little bit of messing you can make it into a very good media center.

I got the 360 to cure the upgrade-itus that I had previously suffered from. Now just got main desktop, laptop and file server, so I can get at the files (documents/photos etc) when I need to.
