broken how?
If iTunes cant do it, then it probably can't be done.
well there is no option off itunes to copy back onto your pc is there?
and broken by i mean like the click wheel sometimes malfunctions but except for that it is fine.
There isn't? Oh. Itunes is more useless than I already thought
Doesn't iTunes keep a copy of everything on the host PC anyway?
Sorry I don't use itunes or own an iPod so i was really just takeng a stab in the dark iPods are famous for their hard drive dying or their memory becoming corrupt and killing the device, so I assumed that's what had happened.
There are tools that let you add music to your iPod without itunes, but their names escape me right now.
ephpod
as long as it is the PC it is snyc'd with then I dont see why you wouldn't be able to copy from it back to your PC. If it isn't the one you originally sync'd with though you are a bit borked.

Technically you can get all your songs off your ipod by viewing hidden folders and copy pasting the funny named mp3 files. Obviously thats a problem since you dont know what each track is called.
There are a number of apps that can get the music from the ipod and the information associated, namely the name, and copy the songs back on to your computer with the original file names intact.
iPodCopy is one, another is iPod Access. Both are shareware costing $20 each. However any resourceful internet user could get a hold of one free by other means

As Masscrazy says, the Ipod stores and indexes its music by the id3 tags embedded in the files. The files you see on the Ipod directory structures are a bit like databases - all the content is stored and indexed in them. If those files are mp3, then these files can simply be copied back and I think I tunes will then recognize them. If you have a Linux system, Amarock will also allow you to copy files off the ipod, although its support for DRM format files is limited.
