    Penryn laptops

As my wife's laptop died I'm going to let her have the one I'm currently using and replace mine (I tend to do more 3d games and graphics work so mine tends to have the grunt power) - but given the new penryn cores are out/due to come out I was wondering anyone know any laptops currently using the penryn core?

    Re: Penryn laptops

    You have a choice of:
    Sony VGNSZ71WN
    Thinkpad T61P
    Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Si2636
and a couple more Sony models i think, for the time being, or you could try and find a compatible notebook and swap the CPU yourself.

I myself is waiting for some cheaper Dell to come out with the T9300

    Re: Penryn laptops

Cheers, none suitable as I'm looking for something with a 17" (ideally) display and a decent 3d gfx card...

I might end up buying a Dell X1730 SLi enabled laptop or alienware (from memory the alienware model has a newer gfx card)

    haha no problem, have fun

that 8800GTX can match the older desktop 8800GTS from what I've seen no small feat for a laptop card

    Re: Penryn laptops

I wonder when Dell or Alienware will catch up with Rock?

I know the Alienware m15x (15.4 screen) has been launched in the US with the new penryn and 8800 gfx card, just need to see when the UK will catch up and then when they're going update their 17" line.

Dell I've not seen anything regarding uplifting their XPS range- but doubt if it will be long...

    Re: Penryn laptops

As you say alienware are doing the 15.4" GTX system which looks to be a fantastic product.

Of course dell own alienware now so alienware are often filling the more niche markets rather than the mainstream where Dell have the XPS M1330 for portable gaming, XPS M1530 which has the GDDR3 8600GT, as well as the vostro/inspirons using the GDDR2 GT's and then the 17" xps to take care of the real gamers. I do think they will eventually stick the GTX in that one but I don't know when.

They have almost all price points covered with really great products so alienware are left with a very heavy 15.4" power house and they will no doubt get a 17 - 19" very extreme laptop.

    Re: Penryn laptops

Just looked at Dell's site this morning - soon as the money I'm waiting for comes through I am going to be very very tempted by a dual 8800 M1730 with a 2.8Ghz processor/4GB of ram.

(Yes, I know most 32bit OS won't use all 4GB but as Dell don't offer 3GB and 2GB gets tight for photoshop work I'll take 4GB).

This is unless Apple update their MBP line before the money comes through (I'd rather have a Mac for graphics and I'll use parellels/VMWare for running the few 3d games I play).

    Re: Penryn laptops

For working on digital photos (mostly raw) Aperture has a lot nicer workflow than lightroom...

Oh and one plus: Microsoft or rather lack there of.

Though I suspect it will be the Dell (Just need to get a list of hardware drivers so I can check it will work with either Fedora or Ubuntu without too much pain.)

    Re: Penryn laptops

Food for thought...... have a look at this Zepto T8100 laptop for about £800:

    UK £799 6224/6324 4GB 320HDD unbeatable offer

Bearing in mind thats 667mhz speed DDR2 and 8600Gt might be eclipsed by the mobile version of the 9600GT within 3-4 months or so, but other than that, it is a pretty good deal.
