Im looking to build a new pc. But im no good with the components. I've asked my mates and they have said they dont follow it as much as they did so couldnt help me.

Basically all im looking for is a new base unit. Max £200-£250. Im not bothered about graphics as i dont play games on pc. I want something thats better than the pos that im using and quiet!!

I was looking at the AMD AM2 Windsor core. Would you suggest intel over that then?

I recently did a budget build with an AMD brisbane and its a very nice PC, I'd thoroughly recommend one.

Using the same Case + PSU as above (they are both very high quality and almost silent)
AMD X2 Brisbane ~£50
Asus M2A-VM ~ £35 (has DVI and is capable of 1080p HD playback with a decent CPU to lean on)
RAM £25 as above.
HDD and optical as above

so thats about £220,

With the extra £30 I would upgrade the CPU to the 5000+ black edition which overclocks nicely to 3.0GHz (it's what I use) £15 extra

And £10 - £15 on PC6400 RAM which the AMD's seem to like but the PC5300 will work fine.

Don't forget if you go for a Black edition from AMD you will need an after market CPU cooler as well. Which I see Mike has suggested a Scythe Ninja for which is good you could also look at the Thermalright Ultima 90 with a 120mm fan of your choice so as loud or quiet as you want, only issue is the really quiet fans cost a bit.

Could someone suggest a heatsink and cooler please. That brings my total to £197. All i need now is a case and cooling. Do i have to buy SATA cables as well?

Motherboard should come with Sata cables well at least a couple.

Heatsink wise Scythe Ninja or Thermalright Ultima 90 with a 120mm fan of your choice.

Case and PSU the Antec NSK 3480 Mike suggested would be good but you have specced an ATX not uATX motherboard.

If you want to get a PSU and Case separately then,

and then a PSU the problem is that you will not find a quality PSU for the £25 you have left in the budget.

ive just built my system and the CPU cooler is a Scythe Mugen, looks almost the same as the one mentioned above and is very quiet

I'd probably get something like webby is suggested. It is the same board afterall but more feature packed and is uATX, which if no one has explained is a standard of motherboard much like ATX but is smaller. So an ATX mobo won't go in the case I originally specced for you as it is uATX and thus too small.

I think someone recommended an ATX version though at the same price

I will be using my vga crt still until i get a tft which will be next month. So would that be ok with the dsub connection?

yeah thats fine. dsub = vga
