    New Storage

Im looking for a 500Gb HDD. Just seen this one on scan for £67

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

500 GB Hitachi 0A33437 Deskstar 7K500, SATA II, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.5 ms, NCQ

Is it any good? never had a Hitachi drive before, are they reliable?

    Re: New Storage

They are OK - I used to use them, but switched to Samsung which were quieter. As for reliability, I had a failure but then any mfr can have a failure so it isn't statistically significant! I would guess that they are no more or less reliable than any other make - have a look at the mfr website to see what the mtbf and rated lifetime/operating conditions.

    Re: New Storage

The 7200.11 Seagates are 250GB/platter, so that'd give you only 2 platters, should be cool and quiet. Though, WD announced their 320GB/platter Caviar drives, which should be available 'instantly', but I don't know the model numbers/names, so can't help there.

And yes, Sammies are known to be quiet.

    Re: New Storage

I'm using one and it's fine. I started using Hitachi deskstars a few years ago and they run quick. The 500gb model is very quick and I've seen it top many reviews against other 500Gb disks hence why I bought one. I think it runs slightly hotter than the others but I've had no issues.
