Bit of Help

Hey I was wondering if there is someone around to help me with a problem.

I have just built a new PC all fine..kinda of.

I want to format my HD as new parts requires windows to reactivate yadda yadda and id like a fresh install anyway.

So i boot up, go into BIOS and change the boot order so the CD Drive is the first place to check, I also have the jumped on the drive set to master.

The only problem is, when the computer is supposed to be booting from the CD Drive, it asks for a key press, but as the keyboard is USB it wont accept the keypress and just tries to boot into windows normally.

I dont have a PS2 keyboard to hand at the moment so I was wondering if there is any other way around the problem?

In your bios the may be an option to allow the use of USB keyboards which you will have to enable oh and how have you been accessing the bios without a keyboard?

this is the thing that is confusing the crap out of me tbh.

When the post screen comes up, I can press either del or tab..thats it..i get into bios fine but after that when it asks for any key press to boot from CD..it doesnt accept them

peripheral section? if the bios can recognize your usb keyboard the windows cd should. could try a usb to ps2 converter. most usb mouses come with those so maybe you might have one.

I do indeed have a USB to PS2 converter and i thought it might work but it didnt..could it be a dodgy CD Drive or something else?

The PS2 thing wouldnt work :s but i found the setting in the bios and that is working xD thanks a million

well the motherboard is meant to recieve the keycode and pass it on to the application. it should work I just can't see why it isn't. check if there are bios updates that have a mention of something like this. also try many other keys when trying to boot the cd.

ok summet new now, ive never flashed a BIOS before and have been informed that flashing the bios for this particular mobo will make it more stable..

the thing is ive never flashed a bios before, so i downloaded my update last night, opened the zip file and read the readme file, it says I need to put the files on disk and then boot the system into DOS and run the files from the disk, i was wondering, does this have to be a floppy disc or can it be a CD?

Either, I think. But you might want a qualified opinion on it.

Do Abit do a GUI based flash utility like Asus do? Then you could do it in windows. Purists might shun such things like vampires and garlic, but cowards like me are quite happy with it.

Flashing the bios on any motherboard is simple if you read and follow the instructions: every manufacturer has the tools to download along with detailed instructions on how to use them. So basically my advice is to RTFM.

Can't remember where I got them from, but you can do it from a flash drive. The files I downloaded were SP27608.exe, which is a format utility for drivekey by HP, which should work with most flash drives (I used an old and unused 64Mb one), and then a zip file called DOS_startup_disk_system_files.zip that contains all the necessary system files. Google will no doubt locate them for you.

I do my flashes in Windows, so if it fails I just quickly download a new one or retry till it passes. DON'T restart the pc! Last time I was lucky my flash failed and I went and downloaded a new bios file and the 2nd one was successful. I don't know if you can do that in the DOS/CD/FLOPPY mode but if you can then do that also, but it might be a PITA.

BIOS flash worked fine..

But now another problem..sound.

Onboard works fine but sound card is weird.

If am testing the thing in MSNs set up thing..i can hear everything same if i use the creative..but as soon as am not in them..i dont hear anything, from anywhere
