fixing my pc, and then slowly upgrading - PSU 1st
my PSU is dead. served me well for many years, from my 1700+ monster, to my opteron 146 (mini monster).
i need to get my PC working, but i currently have a 146, 9800pro, and 1gb ram.
if i get this PSU - Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
would it be ok with my current system, and be ok for Q6600 - 8GB ram - High End GFX - 4 x 500GB SATA HDD and a couple of SATA DVD burners? - i've only heard good things about seasonic, thats why i chose that one.
my current mobo is this one - GIGABYTE - Support - Motherboard - BIOS - GA-K8NSC-939
Re: fixing my pc, and then slowly upgrading - PSU 1st
I would probably go for something a bit more powerful than that. Any reason why you want 8gb of ram?
Re: fixing my pc, and then slowly upgrading - PSU 1st
e-penis mainly, could settle for 4gb :p
Re: fixing my pc, and then slowly upgrading - PSU 1st
i would say at most about 600w.people tend to grossly overestimate how much power a system uses.
Re: fixing my pc, and then slowly upgrading - PSU 1st
That should be fine for your proposed system unless you go SLI. Note that you will need a 64-bit OS to use that RAM.
Re: fixing my pc, and then slowly upgrading - PSU 1st
That's the new revision of the PSU I've currently got running my Barton based rig (3200+/6800/1.5ghz). Its quiet, stable, and has yet to let me down, in about 2 years of 24/7 use.
Like Thorsson said, unless you are going to go down the SLi route it is more than adequate. CPU 170w Max? GFX - 230w Max? Couple of Hard Drives, Say 15-20w. That still leaves you 80w headroom even with the vastly inflated figures I've used.
Re: fixing my pc, and then slowly upgrading - PSU 1st
i have windows vista ultimate 64, will that be ok with the q6600?
thanks for your help guys.

It's not just a matter of watts. You've also got to consider the 12v rails and whether they're strong enough for the graphics card. You could have a 1kw PSU and only be using 200w but if the 12v rail isn't up to it you'll have an unstable PC.

Guilty! I rebuilt my system - not particularly high spec - dual core athlon and a 7300 graphics card, couple of drives - and it draws about 125W - which makes the 520W psu I put in it a bit of over specification! Still - plenty of room for expansion!!

That Quad isnt particualrly good value....
The new Wolfdales look sweet though.
Re: fixing my pc, and then slowly upgrading - PSU 1st
that PSU should be fine and it's a pritty good price :)
Don't go SLi/crossfire but as you're getting an 8800gts with a p35 motherboard that's not a problem ;)
I'd deffinately look at an aftermarket cpu cooler, scythe do make some good price vs performance coolers, Mine and ninja plus rev B are very good for the cost

I picked up the BFG 8800GTS 512mb G92 last week for under £200 from Scan.
Thats the best value in that range by a long shot for a card with a lifetime warranty.
