Help me chose Ram for overclcoking E8400

I'm looking to buy some ram seeing as it's now so cheap and these two deals are looking pretty good.

OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)

GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB24GB6400C5DC)

I'm going to pair this with and E8400 and most likely an Abit IP35 pro. I'm hoping to hit 4Ghz plus (450x9) with the E8400 so I'm wondering which is the best ram to buy to achieve that. I've read some reviews of the OCZ and that looks like it will do the job but the Geil looks good too. Is it easier to achieve the overclock with 4 sticks (4x 1gb) or 2 sticks (2x 2gb)?

Anyone running any of this ram overclocked? Much appreciated.

I have a set of the OCZ stuff and they have a very hard time over 800Mhz (even at 2.1v)... though that's not to say that I didn't just get unlucky with them.

It will be easier to overclock the ram in 2x2GB configuration as it makes the motherboard work less.

The geil stuff should be very good, I've always liked geil and my ultra pc6400 overclocks to 1066 cas 5 which is really good given its price

1. The Platinum overclocks great. It must be set to at least 2.1v though.

2. The Geil Black Dragon 2x2gb is available for under £60 atm... <<-----good deal (shame about the company selling it though).

Re: Help me chose Ram for overclcoking E8400

There are some really good deals around atm. I started looking around and I've found some amazing deals.

The first one that looks good and will hit 500Mhz 5-5-5-18
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NQ PC2-6400C5 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit

And then this one which is even better - it will do the same speed as above but I've seen people run this at 450-475 with 4-4-4 timings. At £25 for 2Gb I think I may just buy some.

I have used them before when I bought my TT Big Typhoon with no issues but that was 2 years ago. They also have the E8400 at £127.49 inc VAT. Itchy fingers are hovering over the credit card .

Geil and OCZ (as well as others) all lifetime warranty. Ideally, it'll remain just a bonus - but if it happens to be needed, who has a better RMA service? Costs are too close to one another to be a viable tie breaker, I don't expect performance to vary much (though do anyone know about the actual chip used in the OCZ Gold/Platinum and Geil Black Dragon?) so I may as well look at service.

Re: Help me chose Ram for overclcoking E8400

I`ve just bought some ram & in anticipation of the new 1333mhz FSB (e8***/Q9***) I decided to get 1066mhz, I know a lot of people feel this is overkill, but if you want to overclock to say 8x500+ I felt it might be worth the expenditure now, rather than being held back by ram. Unfortunately, with the new low multipliers higher FSBs are going to become more important, especially if you want/need to run memory at 1:1 or higher. I bought crucial for £57 - 2gb (inc. del.). However I was tempted by one site (not I believe highly rated) selling G. Skill 2x2gb @ 1000mhz for £82 (approx.). Of course a lot of PC6400 will overclock to 1100mhz+, I just wanted the guarantee of the high rating & the RMA for crucial is supposedly quite good in the UK (I might need it!).

I will go for the GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz Black Dragon.
Has bee reported to cope with 4-4-4-15 timings well.

I think you'd be very lucky to reach these speeds with either of those kits.... GSkill are good but the NQ is virtually their bottom of the range kit, so to expect a 25% overclock.....

I've seen very good clocks with the GSkill NQ here G.Skill F2 6400CL5D 2GBNQ - testing - XtremeSystems Forums and the Geil here techPowerUp! Review :: GeIL Black Dragon DDR2 800 MHz CL4 :: Page 3 / 4

I'm sort of leaning toward the Geil sticks. Decision time is this week.

Crucial Ballistix 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 667MHz/PC2-5300 CL3 are (purportedly) the famous D9GMH chips and supposedly awesome overclockers, about £40/2gb if you shop around, I`ve heard of people hitting 550mhz/1100mhz+ with these.

P.S. No I don`t work for Crucial

I suppose it depends which chips you get with the GSkill..... they were probably all doing suicide runs on XS though, you know what they're like. If you do get the GSkill, and fancy posting some results here I would be interested to see what it does. If not I might buy a kit myself and have a go, must admit this kit has totally slipped under the radar.
