How many partitions would you make & what sizes?
One 10 gig partition for windows and the rest for data :) So then if windows fux0rs you can format the first partition without losing all your "work".
Thats a personal question really and depends on what you've bought the hdd for and what you use your PC for. I have just bought a 160gb hdd and formatted it as 160gb but thats because I bought it for pure storage space.
My 200gb hdd has something like an 8gb c drive, 8gb linux, 40gb music, 40gb games, 15gb for program installers, 20gb downloads and 55gb multimedia partition I use for storing movies/tv series etc :D. Then I have a 160, 80, 80 and 60 which I use for general purpose storage drives :D
personally 2.5gig for swap file ,20gig for windows etc and 2 60gigs for storage/games
I'd do it like da_ging, except I dont see the point in the partition just for the swap file. unless you're trying to keep it near the begining of the drive where its faster
the idea of giving the swapfile it's own partition is to prevent fragmentation iirc..
yep as stoo said plus its faster at the start of the drive
I'd have 50/60 Gig for Windows and Program Files, and the rest for storage.
Exactly right! Almost exactly as I would have done it (swop file on first partition 2Gb) ;)Quote:

I have my 60 GB drive for my Program Files and Windows (Used 25 already... Kinda builds up) and my 160 GB for, erm, everything else :)
your best bet would probably be:
tiny swap partition
small windows partition
larger programs partition
larger still media partition
having said that, i got a bit lazy and am running swap, windows, programs and docs on my raptor, media on my other 2 drives - and its running fine.

Well my 160Gig array doesn't have the OS on, so it's 30GB for programs, 60GB for games, and the rest for downloads.
currently i have:
40gb drive - one single partition for boot (win2k)
160gb drive:
47.9gb boot partition (for replacing the above once i get time to clone it)
23.9gb for holding music
80gb for storage, currently unused
then theres my 120gb drive which is just single parition again, whihc holds all my storage atm.
And what is the easiest way to achieve these partitions, what programmes should i look at?
I've gotta say I dont agree with the "30gig for games, 30gig for media" etc...
I had something like that on my old 80gig and what happens when you need/have MORE than say 30gig of media? You have to start using the other partitions... which to me is messy and kinda defies the whole point of have a specific partition for something. I think one partition for everything you want to KEEP when you format windows works fine. Within the partition can be folders "games", "media" etc...
I reformat windows fairly often, so I try and keep most of the programs etc.. on my storage partition (unless the program needs to register the file types). So when I do have to clean up all I have to backup is my favourites :) Just seems like a logical way to do things...
