Coupe of questions Re: Q6600 and overclocking.

    Hi,

I'm having a little trouble getting my comp stable at the speeds shown below, I prime95 tested over the weekend and it failed after 11 hours. I have found that the PC is stable other than that one instance in apps like SuperPi, CPC Benchmark, etc. Basically all I want to know is, 1. Does anyone have any suggestions? 2. Is my PSU up to it? 3. Should I be worried that Everest is reporting my 12v rail at 10.??v when the asus probe reports it at around 12v? Is this a glitch?

    CPU: Q6600
    Clock Speed: 3200MHz (8x400MHz) @ Auto (1.4v) Temp 50C (Load)
Motherboard: Asus P5k Premium Wi-Fi Ap Thingy
    Memory: Patriot 4GB PC2-6400 Extreme Performance 4-4-4-12
Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 PRO
    Graphics Card: Sapphire - X800 GTO2 (Overclocked)
    Primary Hard Disk: RAID 0 - 2 x WD Raptor 74GB
    Secondary: 500GB SATA
    PSU: Tagan TG480-U01
    DVD: Plextor PX-712SA

    Cheers

I have a q6600 G0 at 3.6ghz but on water. I used to have a akasa 460w psu that wasn't up to a q6600. Your psu could well be the problem as these chips consume a lot of power especially when overclocked. Do you have the G0 stepping chip?

Yeah it is the G0 stepping.

Thought I managed to cover everthing.

If the general feeling is that it could well be the PSU can anyone recommend one. I have been looking but i dont know what level of PSU I would require.

Re: Coupe of questions Re: Q6600 and overclocking.

Why have you pushed the FSB to 400MHz when you could have it at 356MHz and achieve the same clock speed with the higher multiplier? This would put less stress on the motherboard which should help with stability.

As for your PSU I assume that its 480W my OC E6550 and 3870 work fine on my Corsair HX520w but I guess your CPU is going to consume double the power of mine plus I don't know how power hungry your graphics card is.

My instinct would be to say that if your PSU is good quality (which Tagan generally are) then you should be all right. But it is possible that this could be the problem and a move up to a 550 or 600w PSU would solve the issue. Scan have the Corsair HX620w on today only for £76 a saving of £9 which is modular or the Corsair VX550w (non modular) £56

I bumped the FSB upto 400Mhz as i am using PC6400 (i.e. 800Mhz), therefore acehiving a higher memory bandwidth at the same CPU speed. Atleast I think that is right.

Re: Coupe of questions Re: Q6600 and overclocking.

You will probably see better performance boosts by overclocking the CPU and having it stable compared to having the faster memory speeds after all running at 356MHz FSB you would still be running at DDR 712MHz which isn't to shabby I wouldn't expect you to notice the difference between this and DDR 800Mhz you may even be able to tighten the timings on the memory or lower the voltage but again I wouldn't expect to see much difference in overall performance.

Re: Coupe of questions Re: Q6600 and overclocking.

i'd try 400x9, just bump up the multiplier. I've got mine at 3.6ghz 1.375v 11h orthos stable and on load it's 70C, this is on a pk5 premium too. 50C load is nothing, i'd say you've got loads of headroom.
Your psu does sound a little underpowered at 480w though, might be worth looking into a better one if you intend to do loads of overclocking

I`m just wondering if your CPU temperature is accurate, I would have thought that with only a freezer7 & 1.4 volts they would be higher?

That temp is measured with core temp 0.96.1 which is supposed to be one of the more accurate programs.

What PSU are you runnin RoBe?

Try TAT to double check your temps, they do seem quite low for that cooler.

Also try the lower FSB and higher multi, that way you can rule out a few things at least.

I think your PSU is adequate for your hardware and the o/c you are using, don't see any point in buying a new one....

Re: Coupe of questions Re: Q6600 and overclocking.

i'm having problem getting my system to cold boot with any OC. My current startup process is:-

    1.Power on
    2.Black screen
    3.Hit restart
    4.System powers down
5.System reloads stock values, reboots and reports a failed OC
6.I hit F1 into BIOS which still holds my configuration, hit F10 svae changes
7.System powers down and then boots at the above speeds

Has anyone had a similiar problem? and does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

    Cheers guys
