Why that ram? Get 2x2GB of pc6400 ~£65 and there is more room for overclocking...

Everything else looks ok to me... Might be worth considering 8800GTS graphics if its for high resolutions...

The hard drive on scans homepage
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

Western Digital AAKS 500GB is only a few pounds more and will perform better while being cool, quiet and obviously has more storage.

Agreed with above, I wouldn't bother with that ballistix. I would get 2x2GB of Geil from ocuk or memory configurator.

Re: New Gaming Rig: Criticize Please!

Yeah, you'd be better off with PC2-6400.

And you could wait a little while for the E8400, it's not quad core but it's faster out of the box and unless you specifically need a quad core (rendering or whatever) it's a much better buy.

I dont think ryan will be bothering with Overclocking but I can see what people are saying about the ram.

Ryan for a little bit more money you can get the same 8800GTS card I have from SCAN and its worth it i reckon.

Re: New Gaming Rig: Criticize Please!

I have to disagree with these guys, in this modern age (ie since about christmas) £45 is the most i would pay for 2 Gig of RAM.
800Mhz RAM is a fair idea if you want to overclock the CPU, so how about this pair of Corsair sticks for £38. That'll still give you plenty of headroom to take the CPU comfortably to 3Ghz or thereabouts and keep it all in sync (unless i've done my dividing wrong...).
I'm half inclined to suggest you get a Samsung hard drive, a T series, but in truth the Seagates are also good, so no biggie. If 320GB is enough for you for the next few years, then great. As for me, i use over a terabyte AND have so much backed up onto DVDs, so the more the merrier

I'm with MSIC, get a Samsung HDD like the T166 (HD501LJ), it's faster than the average HDD and quieter too, 500GB for £60 is a bargain. Samsung SpinPoint HD501LJ 500GB SATAII Hard Drive 16MB Cache - OEM - Ebuyer

I don't think anyone said he should pay a lot for the memory, I just got 2Gb of OCZ PC2-6400 for less than £30 delivered. There's loads of threads about the price of memory in the bargains section.

    Memory for a Q6600/P35 setup:

    Get PC6400 DDR2.
Get 2Gb sticks, 2x or 4x (only with 64-bit OS).
Get it from a good name.
Get it as cheap as possible.

Fair enough. SiM actually did mention £65, but i take your point.
By the way, do you have the link to that 2Gig?

    OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)

the price has gone up since so you'd probably pay just under £40 delivered.

Yeah like mentioned above i would get a E8400, if the machine is primarily for gaming. Although i dont think you would see a huge difference as the GPU is usually what bottlenecks a machine. The E8400 is also cheaper and overclocks very well. If you want to save some cash like said above get some cheaper RAM, but also you could save a bit by buying a slightly less powerfull PSU (corsair VX 450w should be enough and around £30 cheaper)

Well multiple core gaming is only going to increase, so if the machine core will remain unchanged for more than ~ 18 months then it's better to get the Quad (and unless all you do is game you will appreciate the extra cores anyway). Same applies to the PSU, with the added benefit that modular units are neater (and safer) and improve airflow. I'd never get a non-modular PSU again. Anyway I don't think the 450 is a Seasonic unit like the 520.
