    Best 1000/850W PSU

Im looking to upgrade my PSU and try and future proof it, the parts that I have or am getting are fairly power hungry and I want this PSU to last me so im looking to either go for an 850W or 1000W model, Im not sure which case to go with yet however although i have a few ideas (ill post another thread on that) but id like your opinion on which high end PSU would be the best to power this:

    Q6600
    ASUS P5NESLI
    6GB Ram 800MHz
    ATI 2900XT/Nvidia 8800GT SLI
    3x500GB HD's
    Various 120mm/80mm fans
    Belkin wireless adapter

    Thanks

If your going for the P5N then it will be the Nvidia GPU.
If you intend to overclock then the P5N is not the best board around.
You wont need to go to the extreme of a 1Kw PSU mostly marketing rubbish anyway even on the system you are showing.

If you do really need a PSU of that wattage, the Antec Quattro 850w got good reviews at Anandtech:

AnandTech: Power Supply Summary 2007 - The Best of the Best

Did have some issues with Nvidia GTX(?), but I believe that Antec offered to replace any with that problem.

Im not really gonna overclock this as ill probably be content with the amount of power as it is (the mobo, memory and CPU are in my current machine i just wanna upgrade the case, PSU and hard drives). Thanks for your suggestions anyway, im impressed with the 720W Enermax Infinity.

    Re: Best 1000/850W PSU

If you have the current setup why not buy one of these

    Power Use Meter

And see how much power you actually draw if its above 500w I would be seriously surprised, and the majority of components are becoming less power hungry as more efficient processes are developed.

Also as a guide to power consumption please look below taken from here
    AMD ATI Radeon 3850 & 3870 review

    Power consumption

It's time to do some actual testing with these cards. We'll start off by showing you some tests we have done on overall power consumption of the PC. Power consumption is a big thing, and I'm thrilled to see what AMD has achieved here.

Looking at it from a performance versus wattage point of view, the power consumption is really good with the new 55nm products. Our test system is a Core 2 Duo X6800 Extreme Processor, the nForce 680i SLI mainboard, a passive water-cooling solution on the CPU, 2GB memory, DVD-ROM and WD Raptor drive. Have a look:

    Videocard System Under load

    8800 Ultra 371 Watt
    HD 2900 XT 391 Watt
    HD 3870 286 Watt
    HD 3850 246 Watt
As you can see in this system under full load even the system with the 2900XT doesn't break 400W. With this in mind I would say that a 600w PSU would be ample and I would say that the Corsair HX620w is probably a good place to start. If you want a bigger PSU by all means get one but remember the efficiency of a PSU is greatest in its midrange, when not under full load (ie when your surfing the net doing office work) the system is going to draw a lot less power. So say when not under full load it draws 200W a 600w PSU is likely to be more efficient than a 1000w PSU and both will cope easily with the full load of ~400w (assuming both PSUs have similar efficiency curves over % load and both are quality components).

That's 3-way SLI using 8800 Ultras though You won't find many systems with a higher power draw than that.

Thing is, unless I am mistaken that is the power draw at the wall. Assuming your PSU is a good one and is 80% efficient then your PC's components are only drawing 582W. The other 145W are being lost as heat out of the back of the PSU.

ie, even with 3 way SLI, a 600W PSU is (just) sufficient.

That is probably not the *STARTUP* power draw.
With my storage server the startup power draw is 260W while full load is only 130W.

But then the only thing that drain that much during startup is just the HDDs.

And don't forget that at start up the GPU and CPU are not going to be heavily loaded so the will be extra head room available to spin all the discs.

This is not really the case as all the power-saving feature of CPU and GPU would not be active until at least after BIOS fully initialized (which is like 5~10 seconds).

Well, a small bit of overloading wouldn't hurt is the PSU is decent.
