8800gtx vs 8800gt sli

i was thinking about selling my much loved gtx, and getting 8800gt in sli

what do u guys think?

i reckon i'll get about £300 for the gtx, on ebay or something as i have the thermalright hr-03 cooler with it.

hw much for a sli supporting mobo cos i have the p5k deluxe wifi atm, and i dont think that is sli compatible? (correct me if im wrong)


also how much extra performace would i get at resolutions at 1680x1050... and is it more future-proof?

Some might say overkill, but if you've got the money to spend, you've got the money to spend. I don't have the time to do the calculations page by page, but a quick glance at the numbers here shows that the 8800GT SLi is faster than the GTX by anything from as little as 10% to close to 50%. The average, at a glance (didn't crunch the numbers), seem to be around 35% @1600x1200 with eye candy on. But a few games didn't have SLi numbers for some reason - not sure if it was due to an oversight of the preview, or some technical difficulties. I am not a huge believer of 'future proofing', but it'll provide a longer life than a GTX. The problem is, can you find two SLi card to replace your GTX? I wonder if you'll be able to get £300 for your GTX by the time you can get your GT, especially once you deduct the fees. I reckon people who would previously have spent the money for a GTX would also be more interested in GT SLi once they are more widely available. Personally, I see the value of a GTX with Thermalright to drop to under £250 (especially considering that the updates will probably going to be out soon).. at least I know I wouldn't pay more than £225 in light of the current options available.

Keep this in mind, too...some games that don't utalize SLI properly (or at all), you'll actually see a performance *loss*, as sometimes SLI actually hampers performance, and because a single GT's performance is slightly lower than the GTX's. My advice? You currently got the second best card around right now (behind the Ultra, which I think is a ripoff unless you have the wampum to spend). Seriously, your GTX is fine. If I were you, I'd save up and get another GTX and SLI those. *Then* you'll really be flying on stuff like Crysis (when the patch it to support SLI...).

You always have to bear in mind that the demo is never the finished version of the game, and so performance can always improve (and in some case, worsen) before the retail product hits the shelves......

Stick with the GTX (like the guys above said) and see how it copes once the full version of the game is released.....then you'll know where you stand....

Get a 3870 X2 if you want top performance, at the moment it's the best "dual" card solution. Or wait and see what the 9800GX2 turns out like. You'd be wasting money by buying 2 8800GTs...

No one will give you £300 for a second hand 8800GTX... when you can get a new one for £230 odd quid.

if you got another 8800GTX you would be absolutely flying on games at high resolution becuase of the extra half a gig memory, and it would also be easier to find another GTX rather than finding 2 GTs

i have a 8800GT myself and i really can't believe the performance i get from it, pretty much everything on very-high on crysis getting around 35 FPS i'd say, brilliant card. but with the SLi problems some games have.. just go for the extra GTX

very high on crysis eh? at what res? cant be 1680 because even a ultra cant get 30fps on that res with everything on high let alone very high

have to turn shadows down.. and some other stuff.. but mainly all very high or high.

Frankly speaking, Crysis is not really memory limited past 512MB. Case to the point. We can easily see that Crysis is limited by 256MB unless you are willing to play at a setting a couple of notches lower than 1280x1024 with 2xAA/16AF. But going from 512MB to 1GB brings absolutely no benefit even at 1900x1200/2xAA/16AF (and I don't want to imagine how unplayable it would be at 25##x16##). That's not to say that SLI won't do anything.. but it's more for the extra GPU than extra memory.

Now the full release game is out (and the patch of course) I can post real results of what an 8800GT is capable of.

Under DX9 (WinXP) @ 1280x1024 w/2xAA and ALL settings on high, it strolls along at an average of 35-36fps.

Bearing in mind this is not on my machine, but one I'm building for a friend, GT is an OC2 from BFG, with a Q6600 cpu and 2Gb mem. But it looks great, and runs great, so a GTX should be able to cope just fine.
