Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
Well this is not a thread for posting stuff bad about intel and scan. I would simply like to know who is actuly having problems. I for one am having the heat issue where my cpu will hit around 63C load and the second core would hit 58C, idles at around 45-55C. I know 72C is there max temp but im most concerned that this product isnt living up to what intel have said. Cooler then the old 65nm, yeh only the working ones, annoying really.
I will be emailing intel but it would be nice to know how many people are actuly having these problems. May i also ask you email intel too, more email the more likely intel will do something.
@Admins/mod's please dont close as this is research and flaming etc shouldnt be here.
Thanks for getting answers previously though@scan.
edit: googleing i found this quote from intel....
The maximum operating temperature of the Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor E8400 is 61.4 degrees Celsius. As long as the processor is operating under this temperature it is operating within specifications. We recommend setting any thermal alarms about three degrees below the maximum recommended temperature for the processor. We do not have a normal operating temperature for the processor as this temperature will vary depending on the chassis and other hardware installed on the system as well as the actual load the software is placing on the processor
(found here Overclockers report heat problems with E8400)
And mine runs up to 63C, sorry but that clearly shows a fault there.
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
Good call Hicks, but this thread needs to be kept to one post one problem - not a discussion IMO.
---
Problems here:
Before BIOS update, temps from 127-240 degrees and subsequent mental fan speeds.
After BIOS update, 12-17 degrees difference between cores. Unstable, blue screens.
Voltages wrong, minimum selectable voltage is 1.225v when VID is 1.075v. Acknowledged problem from Abit, to do with CPU microcode released from Intel - they're awaiting another version to correct this.
IP35 Pro with BIOS 1.6 Beta 9.
Edit - Q745A553
VID - 1.075v
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
Whilst I'm aware of the controversy with regard to the temp issues with this chip are you sure you got the max thermal temperature correct. Intel says it's 72.4°C and not 61.4°C. Intel® Coreâ„¢2 Duo Desktop Processor E8400 - slapl
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
Yes i know that but the older response was indeed 61.4C, my cpu is hitting 64/60C for cores atm, 30mins of testing with prime and orthos (same results). And the main point is intel was and probably still are, saying it is cooler then the old 65nm process, with the faulty batch this is not happening but since they are not above there maximum throttle limit it means they are not faulty. WHich is completely wrong as there is a fault somewhere to report these temps and even produce these, across multiple boards i think its an issue with them.
I emailed intel and waiting for a response, and if they are ignorant to this then i will simply ask for my money back and will quote all these random laws that they have broke, false advertising etc.
Also im using an asus p5n-d.
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
Good thread Hicks :).
My E8400 hasn't arrived yet (actually I do believe I will cancel my order tomorrow), but could those with problems also please say whether they believe their chips really are running at the reported temperatures, or whether they believe the sensors are vastly over-inflating the temps instead? Either would be a clear fault so far as I am concerned no matter what intel or certain retailers might claim. But at least if they are running at normal temperatures for a ~30W chip (IIRC) then they are still usable (IMO and for my requirements at least). I'm also interested to see how many folks have no problem with their chip.
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
well i believe it was only one batch effected, yours should be fine. Mine was one of the first batches, waiting from intel still.
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
I have one and it is fine temps all as expected. Using latest beta bios 1.8b3.
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
Got one in a encoding box, having problems with temp reporting.
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
can you provide motherboard models aswell please? will be much useful. And any chance more specific temps? like 40C load or something xD.
Thanks for replies guys.
edit: i see you have an msi board, lucky that you got a decent one, was yours the first batch?
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
Those that post really ought to state Motherboard model, Bios Version and cpu batch codes whether good or bad. That way we can see which batches are affected. If two people have processors from the same batch, but only one of them is reporting strange temps then it is less likely to be a batch issue.
I'm glad that I didn't make it into Scans last pre-ordered lot and will be sent one when the stock comes in. Fingers crossed.
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
Where's the option for "I'm not sure"? :D
Got mine built last night, didn't do much else other than install Windows, all the necessary drivers, and Prime95 & CoreTemp.
Initial thoughts: my god that stock Intel cooler is tiny. There's really not that much surface area in it considering it's like half the height of the 65nm stock cooler. Noisy little bugger, too. The good news is that neither of my cores are stuck, both are within 1-2°C of each other.
Ok, so with the stock cooler on and the side of the case off, my cores are hovering around 42°C at idle. With the side of the case on (an Antec P182, with the big exhaust fans set to low), this crept up to around 44-45°C.
Note that I can't read the Tcase sensor because I'm using an Abit IP35 Pro on bios 14, which can't read the temperatures accurately yet (I'm waiting for a final BIOS before flashing it. The temps reported by the mobo last night were 127°C the first time, followed by readings at 0°C, and then one that stabilised at 6°C). I can only use CoreTemp to read the DTS diodes directly at the moment.
Under load, after about 10 minutes of Prime95 the CoreTemp figures stabilised at ~55°C, which went up to ~58°C with the side of the case on. The highest I ever saw was 59°C.
I remember reading that the cores typically run ~10-15°C hotter than Tcase (which, if I understand correctly, is the value referenced by Intel in their 61.4° or 72.4°C limit - not the core temps). If so, then my E8400 is idling anywhere between ~30-35°C and hitting 45-50°C under load. This is with the stock cooler, using the stock thermal gunk (I wouldn't go do far as to descibe it as paste!) pre-applied to the HSF.
Whaddya reckon, are these temps good, not so good, or plain bad?
(EDIT) Forgot to add, my E8400 is one of the batch that Scan received on Monday, which I received on Tuesday. From memory, the batch # is Q746 and pack date is 17th Jan. Tested on Abit IP35Pro v1.1 w/ BIOS 14, with fan management disabled (stock HSF runs at full speed) and speed stepping, C1E etc all enabled. All systems at default clockspeeds.
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
yeah so much for scan getting 200 in from reliable intel only 20 turned up hope its not gonna be long or ill scrap it for now im getting pulled into supply and demand war again..
Re: Probs with e8400, post here if you have one.
Where do u find this batch number? xD
FPO# Q745A553 pack date 01/04/08 (american layout, stupid. 4th of jan).
S spec : SLAPL.

Yes first batch from scan. I have done a post on scans forum where another member is having these issues with the same mobo as me but an earlier bios. The bios I have is a beta with some things changed specific to the E8400. I have asked if they could update their bios to the same as mine to finally see if it is the bios or the cpu that is at fault. My temps are around 21c at idle and 53c at load at 4.37ghz but were only 33c at 3.6ghz. I am using watercooling.

Why the heck would we close it? :O_o1: :)

Think it's because this one got closed. :)
