Q6600 G0 Seems to be a bit hot!?

Hey guys, i've got my q6600 G0 stepping @ 3.2ghz @ 1.36V right now, but under prime 95 load its hitting 70 degrees reading after a few hours (max temp for this cpu should be 61). I know nothing is ever going to tax the cpu this hard, but its even sat at 50 idle. I am puzzled, as this is with a scythe ninja & the fan on. In contrast, a system i built the other day, the q6600 was sat at 25 degrees idle with an arctic cooling freezer. Im pretty sure the scythe should be on a par with this if not a bit better really.

Thermal paste was applied with one stripe accross the middle as in the recommended diagram, although the arctic freezer pros always come with the full square.
The only other thing i can think of, is numb nuts here when building his pc managed to accidentally power up the pc before the cpu fan went on and left it on for a good minute!

My current thoughts are as follows:

1.The IP-35-E may run really hot
2. The recommended application of thermal paste aint cutting it
3. I fried the chip, even though the pc is absolutely stable
4. The scythe ninja is actually pants, or i have a poor connection from chip to heasink
5. Test with another q6600 next time i get my hands on one

What paste are you using.. silver 5?

Have you fit it properly? It is a tricky thing to get on properly.. you may even think it is on but it will still be a bit loose.

Hmm, that's weird, and 50C at idle is bonkers. Where did you get the fact that the max temp for a Q6600 is 61C, btw?

Why don't you remove the overclock and see if the temps are still unreasonably high for stock speed?

yeah... the push-pins on my heatsink were a nightmare. I was actually worried I was going to damage the board I was leaning on it so hard to try and get it to seat itself properly.

lol, you're still about then mikey- can always call on you for a speedy resposne! Its MX-2 paste fwiw.

Yeh guys, i cant stand the socket 775 heatsink method either! Right pain in the butt. I am tempted to do a refit and a complete repaste, but you know the hassel factor of cracking it all open again Definitely a good idea though.

Its unreasonable temps when not overclocked too. This is both bios and speefan cpu temp report. It's strange though- its not like its casuing any problems or anything, i am just finding it weird as hell.

My B3 with a the ninja was 35 idle 55 underload but that was stock. The stock cooler was a joke. They were awful lol.

Check to see if the base of the HSF is even and then I guess a re-apply is in order. Deffinatly make sure that is on though mine has fallen off my E6600 before

Ive got an hour spare now, could be the time! I really hope i havent managed to fry the chip in some shape or form though. Altho i wouldnt have thought frying a q6600 would be incremental like that, more just complete death.

I've just double-checked on the datasheet - the recommended max Tc (case temp) for a G0 stepping Q6600 is 71 degrees C, so you're still just within spec. Although obviously it still shouldn't be that hot with that heatsink...

I wouldn't think it was dead. Not seen a cpu go for a long time even with a lot of abuse.

i also have problems with temperature on my Q6600 G0..
50 - 50 - 46 - 46 idle temp.. (each core)
have you tried lapping the paste onto it?
sometimes with the Q6600 the heatsink is concave..

just something you might like to try.

no, apparently some people have cut upto 10'C off of their temps by applying more paste than they usually would 'lapping'..
