E8400 getting hot

Hey to all of hexus!

So i finally got my pc built and everything is going well except im kinda dissapointed with my E8400 temperatures but on the flip side im amazed with my VGA temps. Ok lets start with the E8400 i installed my ultra 120 extreme and according to asus "Ai Probe" (or something like that) the cpu temp is 28-30 idle and around 38-40 load i used prime95 to stress test it. But when i use coretemp is says my temps are around 39-40 idle and 49-51 load. Just wanted to know why theres such a large difference (and can you recommend any other temp monitoring software). And now to the 8800 GT temps, i bought a HR-3-GT and fitted it and im geeting 35 almost constantly. But what is strainge is no matter how hard i push it i only ever get 37 maybe 38 max i mainly open a few games simultaniously (BF2, CoH, and so on) i use rivatune to moitor the temps, would appreciate it if you guys could tell me about any VGA stress testing software any temp moitoring software. The only thing i can think of for the CPU is maybe i applied the thermalpaste wrong, but im sure i didnt and im guessing i would have had to do a large amount or almost none at all to make such a big difference

Most P35 boards are currently having trouble reading temperatures off Intel's new 45nm chips.

Keep checking the Asus site for BIOS updates, I'm sure they'll get it sorted soon.

As for GFX stressing software, try using ATi Tool's 'Scan for Artifacts'.

big question, what batch is this e8400 from? and pack date would probably help most.
First batches have problems(about half do anyways) where the temperature diodes are wrong from what i can tell. Mine hits 68C sometimes(with orthos testing), even though the heatsink is hardly warm, a fault somewhere.

Because the cores are always hotter than the temperature sensor being read by the motherboard. Yes there appears to be an issue with the core diodes on E8400s, but you shouldn't be expecting them to read the same as the sensor on the case of the processor inbetween the cores (which is what the mobo reads).

Agreed, Ai Probe reads from the sensor built into the motherboard whereas CoreTemp reads from the sensor actually built into the CPU itself. That accounts for most of the difference in readings.

So does that mean that the temperatures read by CoreTemp are most probably wrong / off by a little so they may be lower?

As far as I can figure your CPU will actually be running cool as a cucumber, but is over reporting it's temperature. This will maybe be fixed with a BIOS update for your board, or maybe is due to an inherent fault with the chip - some people report a BIOS update fixes the issue, others report that it does not but obviously this is board/BIOS version dependent.

How much of a problem this is in the meantime is down to your requirements, I don't think any of these chips are actually throttling even though some combinations are reporting crazy temps of 120+ degrees. I wouldn't bother re-installing the cooler, but have a feel of it to see if it's hot.
