    Unhappy Random Freezing Issues?

    Hey Everyone!

Well i am new around here so excuse my n00b like skills! Okay well onto business i guess, i just built my new Rig with the following Specification:

Item: ASUS P5N-T Deluxe AiLifestyle Series nForce 780i SLI Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard

Item: Coolermaster RC-1000 Cosmos Full Tower Case

Item: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Energy Efficient 95W edition Socket 775 (2.40GHz) G0 Stepping L2 8MB Cache OEM Processor

    Item: OCZ 2GB Kit(2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Memory NVIDIA SLI Ready CL4 Unbuffered 2.1V
    Qty: 2

Item: Coolermaster RealPower Pro 850W Modular PSU

Item: XFX 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 DVI PCI-E Graphics Card

    Item: WD Raptor X WD1500AHFD 150GB SATA 10KRPM 16MB Cache - OEM

    Item: Western Digital WD5000AAKB 500GB Hard Drive 7200rpm 16MB Cache - OEM

    Item: Scythe Ninja-PLUS Rev B Socket 478, 754, 940, 775, 939 & AM2 CPU Cooler

    Item: Saitek Eclipse II Keyboard

Item: Optiarc AD-7191S 20X DVD±RW/DL/RAM LightScribe Serial ATA Black Bare Drive - OEM
    Qty: 2Cost: 15.32

The problem i have is that, for some reason and very randomly the PC will just crash out for no reason at all. Windows doesn't seem to bring anything up in the event viewer, my CPU hovers around 34`c temp and everything else works fine. I can be happily working away, logging on, playing a game , whatever and the system will just lockup. The only way to resolve it is with a hard reset, which then i get the following problem sometimes too...

Sometime the system wont even post, the screen will load up and then it will just freeze on the logo and nothing more happen, yet other times it posts fine. Its really annoying and i have no idea what could be causing it, IF someone can fix this or point me in the right direction then theres 1 free Beer up for grabs! (i am serious about this bit too! )

Look forward to the help and thanks in advanced guys and gals

    Cheers,:

    Jacker

Try swapping the SATA cables, us good quality locking cables such as the Akasa range. The standard red cables are utter crap to be honest.

Have you got the cpu at stock and increased the voltage of the ram? They seem to need to 2.1v.

    Re: Random Freezing Issues?

There seem to be a number of incompatibilities around between mobo and PSU these days; often just the luck of the draw whether certain combos work together. I don't know who Coolermaster got to build this particular model. PSUs are often overlooked in terms of quality, everyone thinks that buying the right wattage is all you need, and then making the choice on looks.

Could possibly be the board shorting on the case as well, is it well secured to the mounting tray and are you using the insulated red rings on the screws?

That wouldn't cause lockups. The computer wouldn't boot. Full stop.

    Re: Random Freezing Issues?

Not true in fact, if the contact is not very good (or bad as the case my be) it would cause an intermittent fault. I have had this one myself on a PC I threw together with about 2 screws.

    Thanks everyone for the help!

Did some digging about on this over the weekend, turns out its a known issue with the board and its something around hte BIOS. If anyone else gets this problem head over to the Asus Forums:

    Re: Random Freezing Issues?

I've had similar issues and just raised a RMA to reject the motherboard under distance selling regulations. Even with the latest 1001 BIOS the board is still very flaky in non-overclocked conditions. Yes, there are BIOS issues (well documented all over the web) but I can't really wait for them to be sorted.

I've been struggling with the same issue myself, recently and a search lead me to this thread. The very first thing I noticed is that I have the exact same mobo as you, too

Anywho, that link would be splendid ^^

I'll have a google around, in the meantime.

    Also, what's RMA?

    Re: Random Freezing Issues?

RMA means that you send the board back to where you bought it from for refund or replacement, although i'm not entirely sure what the acronym stands for. Suppliers will have an RMA procedure on their website to tell you what needs to be done if you want to send something back.

    Re: Random Freezing Issues?

Ooooh. Well, I updated the BIOS (to 1001) so I'll see if I get the freezing problem sorted. The amount of people who have had this problem that I stumbled across during my travels is startling.

    Re: Random Freezing Issues?

    Hey Link97,

This board was hell to get working, i tried 2 replacements, BIOS updates and still no luck either

In the end i sent it back for a replacement board from, another manufacturer and all is okay now. So if you still have trouble after the bios update then get it returned and order yourself a new board =)

    Cheers,

Yea, I heard quite a few people switched board, even just to the EVGA version of the 780i. However, I've been pretty stable for quite a while now with the new 1001 BIOS update (not really new any more, but most recent) so I think I can safely put off getting a new board. That said, I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. I'll keep checking the ASUS website for more BIOS updates.
