Well the core 2 FSB is multiplied by 4 or quad pumped. So 1356/4 is 339 as it should be :)
Your parts are rated at 1066mhz but then what did you think overclocking was about? :D
You are on the limits of the quad at those temps. 71 is it's max as Intel would have you believe. Are you at the lowest Volts you can be at for the clock? Lowering the volts should lower the temps but may make it unstable.

Depends on how you're measuring the temps, 72C is the maximum external IHS temps as specified by Intel for a G0 Q6600. The maximum coretemps will be around 10-15C higher.

Sounds like I am well within the limits, its been folding all night and is still going strong this morning. In fact the temps are now around 60 - 62 degrees. Voltage is set to automatic as requestedby the BIOS when I unlocked the FSB and is reported as 1.328V in cpu-z.
Mike, I know what O/Cuing is about, I just have not done any since the old Athlon T-bird days, the parts are rated 1066 and it would have cost me another few hundred to get 1366 rated parts so I just thought I would get a second opinion on if I was pushing it too hard.

Using speedfan to measure temps, its giving me a temp for each core and they do vary by a degree or so between them.

Sounds about the right voltages. I've not used speedfan for a while I use core temp or everest which always seemed more reliable back in the day.
You should be able to push it a lot harder than that to be honest. Some get up to 3.6GHz + on air cooling
As you don't get unlocked multipliers you have to push the FSB up and at 3.6GHz it will up to 400Mhz or 1600mhz (x4) depending where you look as you found in the OP.

maybe his cooler is not that great hecnh the poor temps at only 3ghz.. all i know is that the TM 120 ultra is the best cooler out atm and i dont know how much better it is compared to the OP's cooler

It's a very good point. Quick Google does suggest that the Q6600 G0 with the stock HSF can manage about 3.0-3.2Ghz in general.

G0 is the stepping on this chip, I heard that was a good clocker?
Anyway, the HSF is a Zalman low profile jobbie as I bought all this stuff in PC world (won some vouchers at work) and they didn't have any of the 120mm flower coolers in. I think the temps were high last night due to ambient temp in the room (gaming all night, and I have 2 x 24" TFT's that put out a lot of heat) as today its been folding all day (monitors off) and it hasn't gone over 60 deg.
so, do you think my cheapo value RAM and Gigabyte P35-DS3 will handle 400mhz..?
Only one way to find out I suppose...

What RAM is it? PC5400, PC6400? I ask because PC6400 is 400Mhz :)
Those low profile coolers aren't that great but good for SFFs and such like.

G0 is a good clocker. Many people reports 3.6Ghz (which is almost taken for granted).
But I think those results are usually managed with the current list of favourite HSFs.

Timings are ok but already quite loose for PC5300.
Given the temps you are already at I would stick at 3.0GHz which is the RAM's limit anyway. It doesn't look like the kind of RAM you want to push.

it says in CPU-Z that it will do CAS 4 at 333mhz, do you think its worth changing from CAS 5 to CAS 4?

Core 2's see barely any performance difference between those sorts of timings but if you want to tinker.. sure lol
